Wonderful book. Watch the film afterwards. I used to teach this book to my students before I retired. I think children need to know about the Holocaust & this is a sensitive way to inform them.

Most people love the book -I’m Jewish and have read tons of Holocaust stories …
It wasn’t my favorite…
It’s a young adult book…
BUT… I do admire the author John Boyne and love his adult books.
“The Hearts Invisible Furies” is amazing!!!

Also – for a powerful ‘small’ book about the Holocaust- I recommend “Night” by Elie Wiesel

I have a problem with Holocaust fiction. There are so many real, raw survivor stories which we need to preserve and remember in the hope that humanity will never be complicit in a massacre of that magnitude again. I think that once you start to create fictitious works based on real events, lines are blurred and eventually all of the stories become myths or murky dramas. If you’re going to read The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas then I would urge you to please also read a memoir of a survivor, so that you understand that there were horrors which took place that even the best authors could not make up

I agree. My father finds it very hard to watch fiction. However Boy In S P is suitable for youngish children which at least is a start to knowing what happened. My father took my kids to see it years ago …..he then felt able over the years to tell them his story.

There is a beautiful message in their that only we could all wish adults had the ability to do…but for me it was just devastating
I felt sick it upset me that much (even knowing it was not true)
