Try an Elizabeth Berg novel. Or shake things up with some horror.

I just finished We Were the Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter. I guarantee it will take you out of your comfort zone

You could try starting out with short story collections. Some I’ve enjoyed are:
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle,
The Whore’s Child by Richard Russo,
The Anastasia Syndrome by Mary Higgins Clark,
The Golden Ball by Agatha Christie.
I recently got a book of essays, Small Wonder by Barbara Kingsolver, which is more or less the same thing except it’s nonfiction. I haven’t read it yet but it looks interesting.

Since you are in crminal justice as well: the Alienist by Caleb Carr. It is criminal, murder, oldfashioned deduction of who did it, in NY of end 1800’s, very dark and gloomy

A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess should do the trick.
