You could try starting out with short story collections. Some I’ve enjoyed are: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, The Whore’s Child by Richard Russo, The Anastasia Syndrome by Mary Higgins Clark, The Golden Ball by Agatha Christie. I recently got a book of essays, Small Wonder by Barbara Kingsolver, which is more or less the same thing except it’s nonfiction. I haven’t read it yet but it looks interesting.
Since you are in crminal justice as well: the Alienist by Caleb Carr. It is criminal, murder, oldfashioned deduction of who did it, in NY of end 1800’s, very dark and gloomy
Get a genre list book report graphic organizer you can google it and then pick a genre head over to the nyt bestsellers list look up the top books in the genre you chose and randomly pick one. See what happens.
