Very much. At the time there was also mini-series done on tv. It was a big deal.

Americans watched in record numbers as the epic aired on eight consecutive nights and went on to receive an unprecedented 37 Emmy nominations (winning for nine, including Outstanding Limited Series). Haley wrote in TV Guide: ` `Roots’ speaks of the American human drama, in which ancestrally we all came from somewhere across the ocean.’

Yes but it was over 40 years ago. This was one of the best books I ever read. I bought my first kindle after I went to Atlanta almost 10 years ago with 7 or 8 paperbacks to make sure I had something good to read.

Read it in the early 1970’s then watched the mini series. I think it was the first mini series ever.
I reread it last Summer. I loved how stories of people abruptly ended and the story went on without them. I was frustrated with it until I realized that was slavery. Your daughter is sold and you’re left without knowing anything. Brilliant writing.
