Sitting at the doctor’s office and forgot my book! ? Anyway, has anyone read the book Roots by Alex Haley?
Many years ago
@Malinda did you like it?
Very much. At the time there was also mini-series done on tv. It was a big deal.
@Malinda really? That’s neat. I’ll look into it. I bought the book at a discount store because it looked good…
The landmark dramatization of Alex Haley’s classic saga followed his ancestors from Africa into slavery and then to their freedom in the post-Civil War South. Americans watched in record numbers as the epic aired on eight consecutive nights and went on to receive an unprecedented 37 Emmy nominations (winning for nine, including Outstanding Limited Series). Haley wrote in TV Guide: ` `Roots’ speaks of the American human drama, in which ancestrally we all came from somewhere across the ocean.’
BUT as always – read the book first!
@Malinda I will! Thanks!!
Brilliant book. Really opened my eyes
I have it at home ?
I loved all those books didn’t know you could still get them X
That’s why
I have the kindle app on my phone – always a book at hand
@Susan so obvious and yet such a good suggestion because I don’t have Kindle!
@Jennifer I got one during my commuting years when I was tired of getting stuck on a train carrying a heavy book I just finished but having nothing new to read
Roots is one of the best books ever
Yes, a good book.
Oh my gosh, I got in so much trouble for reading it in school in the 9th grade. Mostly because I was reading it in Geometry class…but I digress. ?
Read it years ago. Was one of my favorites.
Feel your pain… but I haven’t read Roots.
Yes
No, but I did watch the tv series many years ago.
Read it when it came out and I was 11
Brilliant x
Book was fabulous. The mini-series did it justice, but the book was a bit better.
Years ago! I loved it and the mini series!
Queen was good,too.
Don’t you have a Kindle or Nook app on your phone? Not my first choice, but it works!
@Jan, the Kindle app for my phone has come in handy countless times!
I’m never without a book now! Love it!❤️
Such a great book.
Watched the TV programme a long while ago. Which was good.
Way back when it was first published
It is a good read
I always have books on my phone.
Yes, it is a classic
Great read??
A long long time ago & it was so good.
Read it ages ago, very good
It is a great book! If you have an iPhone, you can download eBooks and store them in your iBook app. The Kindle app and other same type apps are free also.
Yes, years ago. So good!
That’s tragic! I was at my Doctor’s yesterday and took a 900 pager – anything is better than trashy mags.
@Helen Thats for sure
I have it, haven’t read it yet. I agree, but sometimes I flip through them and see something that makes me want to write poetry or a line in my science fiction novel.
Yes. It’s fantastic.
Oh my yes! It’s a really good book about a terrible part of our history!
It’s wonderful! Enjoy!
Many, many years ago, it was fabulous!
Long time ago, remembered it as wonderful
Great book
Read ” Queen” by Alex Haley. It’s about the other side of the family and also really good
Yes. Very good.
To be honest I don’t have the heart to read Roots. It is just too painful.
So long ago! Drats on forgetting your book! Ugh!
Yes! in 1976. I would love to re-read it as an adult. I was only 18 at the time.
I did a very long time ago. It was really good. PBS showed the miniseries. I now own the DVDs.
No, but watched the mini series when it was on TV years ago. Great story. Happy reading.
Yes! Epic!!!
Long years ago. Probably still have it somewhere.
Yes but it was over 40 years ago. This was one of the best books I ever read. I bought my first kindle after I went to Atlanta almost 10 years ago with 7 or 8 paperbacks to make sure I had something good to read.
I really want to read it, but i fear it will be too intense,,
Wow I read it 30 years ago.
Everyone is mentioning the miniseries. My dad made us watch it. I was in high school.
I don’t know how the series holds up but it was very good.
Years ago but remember the scandal with this book?
the scandal?
a 70‐yearold author from Bethesda, Md., who contended there were substantial similarities between “Roots” and his own earlier novel, “The African.” He sued in Federal District Court in Manhattan for more than half the profits of “Roots.”
AS the trial was about to reach a climax with summations by the opposing lawyers, they issued the following statement: “The suit has been amicably settled out of court. Alex Haley acknowledges and regrets that vatious materials from ‘The African’ by Harold Courlander found their way into his book ‘Roots.’ “ Supposedly, the settlement was in the hundreds of thousands.
??
My favourite book ever! I’ve read it so many times.
Yes
Of course
A few times!
It is great
Multiple times!
Quick! Download the Amazon app! 🙂 And no, I haven’t read Roots.
Back in Junior High School.
Absolutely a great book! It was a rage on the shelves in the late 70’s
Many years ago. It was also one of the first mini series.
Long ago and far away
Yes and I loved it and the Mini-series.
if the mini series on tv is anything to go by, it should be an awesome book
Shoot!!
Such an amazing story! I loved this book
Yes. Loved it. Made a big impact on my teaching and learning career.
Yes and I loved it
When I was much younger and loved it. Queen was very good ad well.
I hate when that happens- so sorry!
Ya, awesome book
I read it in college
Years ago
Excellent book.
Read it in the early 1970’s then watched the mini series. I think it was the first mini series ever.
I reread it last Summer. I loved how stories of people abruptly ended and the story went on without them. I was frustrated with it until I realized that was slavery. Your daughter is sold and you’re left without knowing anything. Brilliant writing.
Black Lives Matter
Yes …… it was a nice story
Years ago.
Years ago, it is very intense, one of my favourites though.
I read it several years. The content was difficult but it is very well written. Same with Queen by the same author.
no but now you got me interested, saw the tv series
Read it many years ago before they made the mini series. It is well crafted and tells an important story . Heartbreaking but also redemptive.
I read it many years ago, but I remember it was an excellent book.
I read it many years ago, and read it again last year. The movie is absolutely great too.
yes and it is one of the best books I have ever read
Yes. It’s one of the best
Again years ago. One of my favorite reads
