I have a second generation Fire (before the cameras and the HD and all that) and it’s my love. Lots of free books in the amazon store.

I’d say yes, but I may be biased considering I publish on Amazon. 😛 Ebooks are usually cheaper than hardback/paperback if you’re looking for quantity, too.

Yes, do it! It’s the best. There are so many awesome books on kindle and it’s so easy to take with you anywhere. I have a Fire. I love it and I even get pretty, colour covers, which is a huge bonus for me, because I love book covers.

Depends, do you like/want to read digital books? I don’t own a Kindle, and I probably will never read a digital book unless it’s some obscure, out-of-print thing I’m interested in (in which case I would likely obtain a PDF version and print it anyway). Investment in a Kindle could also save a prolific reader money, since ebooks are usually cheaper than physical books. Deliberate carefully, that way you don’t throw away money on something that might turn out to be useless to you.

I do the same. I actually prefer real books but every so often my library doesn’t carry a book in a series or an out-of-print book and there’s my Kindle coming to the rescue. Another advantage is that I have Prime Reading which makes me eligible to read a wide selection of books for free. And when I travel I no longer have to argue with my husband about the fact that I’m bringing more books than clothes on the trip, I just bring my Kindle with me, lol.

I’m a sucker for older used books. So that’s mainly what I will buy, unless the book is too new to have an older copy that smells better out there lol. Just got a copy of A Tale of Two Cities published in the 1960s last weekend and I love it!

But the Kindles and other ereaders are great for comfortable reading. If you want to lay down, you don’t have the issue of trying to find a position to see and hold a book without straining.

Yes. I’m a huge lover of “real” paper books, but that doesn’t stop me from buying on my Kindle. I can find some great deals on best-selling novels (generally 1.99-3.99) on my Kindle, you can find some great free books or cheap (99¢-$2) eBooks that are independently published, there are thousands of free classics at the Project Gutenburg website to download to Kindle, I can read in the dark without worrying about a light, I can have a hundred downloaded books in the palm of my hand when I travel, if for some reason your eyes are strained then you can adjust the font size, it’s lightweight (less than a LOT of books), the list goes on and on. I have also found that it helps keep my “real” book collecting in check. I buy about half eBooks and half real, physical paper books now so my shelves aren’t quite as overflowing. And I buy books based on the best deals. If I can get a nice used copy cheaper than I can get it in eBook, then I buy the real paper version.

Oh, and if your library offers an eBook borrowing program (and SO MANY do now) you’ll literally have thousands of free, well known, best selling novels at your disposal.

I have mine for about 5 years now, started with original kindle now onto Kindle Fire, I still love a real book, so I normally have two books going at once, one in my hands that i can turn pages and the other in my purse on my Fire, so when I’m waiting on the side of a rugby or soccer pitch, training sessions and all that jazz. I don’t know how I lived without it, although I was certain, I’d never get used to one. Be mindful, it did take me about five books to really start enjoying it.

I have 2 Kindle’s, a Kindle Fire and a Paperwhite. I love the Paperwhite in the summer, I can read outside really nicely. But I read off my tablet with the Kindle app a lot, because I get a lot of ARC’s and PDFs from authors, so it’s actually easier to read those off the tablet.

It totally depends. I personally love paperbacks, but have a kindle as well. The really good books that you are proud of having in your bokshelf I buy as paperbacks, but “others” and especially books I want to read on vacation or on the train etc, I buy as ebooks. I have a kindle paperwhite, it’s amazing, there ar tons of free ebooks and I really have nothing negative to say about it. you just need to know what you want…

I had earned a certificate at Staples and they had a “come on sale” with the Fire, and I ended up getting it for $12, I’m not much of an e book reader, but I like the freedom of being able to get somethings I don’t want to pay a lot for, but the authors still get paid.

They’re very proprietary devices designed to push Amazon products and services. Somethings you should know: You cannot use the GooglePlay store for apps, you have to use the Amazon Store even though Fire is based on Android. There is a workaround to get the GooglePlay store on your Kindle, but it’s an involved process. That being said, I won my Fire 8 HD, I didn’t pay for it. The screen quality and battery life are exceptional. If you’re going to use it as an Amazon device, get one. The price is sensational. If you’re going to use it as a general tablet? I’m not so sure. https://www.howtogeek.com/232726/how-to-install-the-google-play-store-on-your-amazon-fire-tablet/

My problem with Kindle is that they are just cheap computers and really hurt my eyes after trying to finish a 300 + page book. I like to hold a book in my hands, but others just love ’em

I didn’t buy a fire for this same reason. I love my first generation kindle touch

0

The nook tablet is actually a Samsung galaxy S2, which is a real computer. It just has the nook platform on it, which I like. Different from a kindle.

0
Angela

Well it’s the same screen in essence. It’s like trying to read on a computer screen for too long. That hurts!

1
Kara

I like the paperwhite and my nook glowlight plus. I agree the glare from a tablet can hurt the eyes. I was just speaking to the computer issue.

Have had a Fire for a couple of years now and love it. Only complaint was that it’s hard to read on it outside. Finally bought the Paperwhite last month and LOVE it!!

1
Reply
Jackie

Bought a Fire got headaches because they are hard on the eyes. Bought a Kindle touch and loved it but wanted to read at night so bought a paper white and love it most. You can also read outside. I notice a lot of people sugesting tablets or the apps for phones or tablets these are fine but if you do a lot of reading they are hard on the Eyes. You can also read outside with the regular e-readers when you can’t with your phone or tablets at least very easily.

The only reason i have a Kindle is because my wife got me one .I was a die hard real book reader and was wondering where all the killer horror novels were. They dont have a horror section at alot of book stores here if at all . Now im hooked but i do agree with the making my eyes sore .

You must have a fire… regular kindles read like a regular book

Yes. However, if you want to also read cookbooks and/or graphic novels, get a fire. I use my surface, cause I have that but the kindles and fires are great deals.

truthfully, if you’re going to use it as an e-reader, it’s not terrible so long as you mostly use Amazon. As a tablet, the Fire 8 HD has an amazing screen, the battery life is very good, and I stream Netflix. If it wasn’t an Amazon tablet, it’d be double the cost. Easily

If you already own an iPad you don’t need the additional expense of a Kindle. Just download the Kindle app on your tablet and you’re good to go. If you don’t have a tablet then Kindles are nice. I owned my Kindle for a few years before getting an iPad.
