Seems to me that people who are into books cannot stand movies! Name a movie you think was brilliant.

Gone With The Wind.
Silence of the lambs.
The Silence of the Lambs
Yes, loved them both, but when you think about it there was a lot of overacting in Gone with the Wind.
@Wendy It may seem like over acting to us, but at the time it wasn’t. The film is in my top 10 of all time favourite films.
@Jo I do prefer the book, though
The book thief
@Callie yes, loved it!
Better than the book x
I only have one film based on a book that I was really disappointed with and that’s ready player one. Everything else I’ve seen has been ok and I’m a huge book and movie fan x
@Callie oh good! So am I ??
i love the book of Ready player one. Have listened to it on audible countless times. I knew I’d be disappointed by the film so have mentally separated them as entirely different entities. On its own I think the film is a decent enough fun adventure movie. But it isn’t a film of the book ready player one. Character names are the same, and the basic premise is the same, but to me that’s about it.
I guess it would be pretty impossible to make a film that is true to the book though, so understand why they did it. The book is absolutely amazing though
The green mile x
The only movie adaptation that’s any good in my opinion is The Green Mile.
It.
I love movies. I love books. Generally though, movie adaptations are never as good as the original book. For movies that aren’t based on a book, though, I love movies ?
I’m with you on this
Dawn of the dead (zombie lover)
The first and the last harry potter movies
One flew over the cuckoo’s nest
@Nina never saw that one
@Wendy , as good as the book
I really enjoy both
The Green Mile! One of the only films that I think did the book justice!
@Rebecca and Shawshank Redemption.
Yes definitely!
Shawshank redemption
Oh yes, fantastic film.
Not read the book, but The Hate U Give was incredible
@Mary this is one of my daughters favourite books x
Any thing with robin williams or Tom hanks . However , I really didn’t enjoy Tom hanks as an author .
@Carly haven’t read his books yet. Can’t stand some Robin Williams movies!
Misery. Loved the book and thought the film was really well cast.
@Tracy yes that was a good one!
I read the book after the film – both great
Yeah Kathy Bates was perfect for that part x
Cathy Bates was amazing as Annie! I’m not sure they could have cast her better!
I liked the films of Catch Me If You Can, My Week with Marilyn and Blackkklansman, all based on true story books. But I don’t think I like any films based on fiction books.
The book thief
@Zoe never knew there was a film, that’s my favourite book ever!! X
@Sarah yeah it is a film 3hrs but fantastic
Ooh? Have to look up the movie! I absolutely loved the book.
@Tala honestly it’s brilliant
Thank you. I’ll look for it.
Room loved book and movie x
me too 🙂 and 100 yr old man book and movie x
Also Bridget Jones
I liked Room and the Bridgets too
I think the game of thrones tv series was better than the books , and like we were discussing earlier I thought ready player one was better as a film even though they left tones of stuff out .
@Carly I agree, couldn’t get into the books
The one change I disliked in GoT was Jamie after he returned and how he regarded his sister. Book Jamie was more level headed after he lost his hand.
oh i’d take a good story in any format 🙂 i have even enjoyed numerous films from books…. some completely different to the book but still good.
@Wendy I’m the same
Oh this is so me! I’m the weirdo that hates most films. I find them dull.
I love the Harry Potter films though! Brief encounter is fabulous (old, beautiful music).
OMG I love movies! I’ve never thought that people who love books don’t like movies. Some of my favourites are Twelve Angry Men, Brief Encounter, Lost in Translation, all the Harry Potter films…
Life of Pi!
Loved The Green Mile as a film more than a book
I must admit I didn’t read the book as someone at work at the time, said don’t bother when I had mentioned that I had seen the film as they were so alike.
I just love a good story, whatever the format. Movie, theatre, book, even good TV!
I love movies, I just hate when they change the story line too much, and casting is so important.
Stand by Me (The Body)
Romeo and Juliet (The dicaprio version)
IT (latest one)
Gone Girl
Oh, and I can’t wait for Pet Sematary to come out.
My sisters keeper was a fantastic book but the movie not as good
Oh the film was terrible !!! And Jodi picoult is one of my faves !!
@Carly, I enjoyed Plain Truth as a film.
@Kymmy I haven’t seen plain truth
@Carly it wasn’t bad at all, it’s what I’d call one of those easy watching afternoon films. I couldn’t get into the book but the film was good.
I personally preferred Cloud Atlas as a movie to the book. It’s very rare for this to happen to me.
Edited to say that I love movies in equal measure to books. Most of the time I try to think of them as an interpretation of the text which isn’t necessarily 100% faithful.
I also enjoy theatrical adaptations and so glad to say that both my daughters are enthusiastic theatre goers!
Cloud atlas was a pretty good stab.
@Dawn, I absolutely love the movie. It’s one of my favourites and have it seen it over 10 times and still enjoy it.
I think the film definitely has more feelings in it and the score was phenomenal.
@Dawn I actually needed the movie to make sense of the book ?
Bone collector absolutely loved the film hated the book
The Shining! I loved the book and the film.
I’m really sad cause the only 3 things I love with a passion (apart from boyfriend and cats) are books, movies and music. And only category I don’t like in them is sloppy stuff ???
@Dee, I’m with you there (add theatre and sewing for me). No chick flicks and no horror for me. I like gothic horror but not modern gorey things.
@Tala nope don’t like horror either. I like action movies and the superhero ones too ????
I love super hero movies. Action it depends on my mood. I normally like things that make me think. I love sci fi more so in movies than in books I have to admit.
Pans labarynth. Xx
I am Legend.
& Bird box. Watched it last night and loved it as well as the book.
I think the movies are equally brilliant. It’s just that the books have all the pages in the world to explain all the details and movies don’t. I love both.
I preferred New Moon film (twilight series) to the book.
@Lynne me too
@Dee omg i thiught i was the only one. The book was fab, the film i couldnt get in to.
@Lynne I thought I was the only one too ??
Les Misérables- my favourite: book, film, musical, soundtrack….everything!!!!
The shawshank redemption. Great book and movie
A Walk to Remember. The film was a lot better than the book. I love reading & watching films but there’s some films I don’t want to read & some books I don’t want to watch x
I love movies, although agree the book is usually better. However one of my fave movies is Reqium of a Dream but I really struggled with the book due to the lack of punctuation ?
Brokeback Mountain. The novella is good, but the movie broke my heart
IT, both the original and the new one
The Shining, Green Mile, Shawshank, Misery, Dolores Claibourne, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.
Bridges of Madison County! I love films and books. I’d rather read a good book than watch a bad film, but equally, I’d rather watch a good film than read a bad book.
Lord of The Rings, The Hobbit.
@Ruth the movies were freaking amazing! Still haven’t read the LOTR books though
@Wendy I’ve read The Hobbit but not LOTR, I’m tempted though because the films were so amazing.
i want to but it just seems like such a big commitment. Also why I haven’t read Les Mis and Game of Thrones
Wendy Sice I love Game of Thrones too but that is an even bigger commitment. Not sure I’m up to it!?
The Children Act
Misery
Fargo and O Brother, Where Art Thou?
The green mile. Book is better but film is still brilliant
Green mile
Fargo the series was insanely good!
Forrest Gump. The film is far removed from the book, but both are incredible
The Limehouse Golem, the film was better than the book.
Dirty dancing! Patrick swayze with his top off, what’s not to love
Well, you’ve certainly hit the nail on the head as far as I’m concerned 😀 I rarely watch movies (maybe twice a year, if a friend has invited me round), and I don’t own a television. Books, though, I could probably reach Earth’s outer atmosphere with my pile of books!
The English Patient.
Ready Player One
The light between oceans. Wonderful story and cinematically beautiful to look at.
The Green Mile, I love books and can name a whole load of movies I like, so disagree with this statement.
Gone girl!
An old one, but the Princess Bride. My favourite movie and book.
I think I must be the only one who isn’t too bothered. I just see the two things as different entities. I get annoyed if something in a book or a film isn’t right (Americans, Brits don’t say normalcy) but I don’t think about one when viewing the other. I just enjoy it for what it is.
I am the same @Bronwen. I have friends who get so cross with films that don’t follow the book closely, but I take each on it’s own individual merits.
I thought Stardust was better than the book.
Omg yes! I love that movie so much more!
I like a good book and a good movie. I have to disagree with this assumption
I love both. Xx
Twilight all 5 of them both
I prefer books but i do enjoy some films xx
Chocolat xxx
I love movies too!
Slumdog millionaire..loved the movie more than the book❤..and Shawshank redemption.x
I have re ad the Lord of the Rings trilogy many times, but I still enjoy the films. I’ve watched them several times too!
The green mile
Movie and book 🙂
I love both!
I love both!
Greenmile!!!!!
Green Mile was a fab read and although I love the film Tom Hanks wasn’t who I wanted to be Paul. Thought he needed to be older.
I watch loads of movies, especially horror.
The Notebook, The Persuit of Happiness, Les Miserables and The Greatest Showman
I thought that a time to kill was well done.. Long time ago though and maybe I was influenced by how nice Matthew mcconaughey looked!! ?
There are countless brilliant films, but the book version is always better imo
I like reading a book after I’ve watched the film, you get so much more out of the book then, I did it with the hunger games trilogy and loved them so much I then watched the film’s again!
The film of Brooklyn was even better than the book; conveying all the hope and sadness of emigration. My family left Ireland when I was seven, so the film felt very real to me.
The Green Mile
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
The Beach
Book and movie both brilliant. I got married on phi phi island 😀
I love both!
We have a vast DVD collection at home of all our favourites (my partner and I) and 2 huge book cases full of our favourite books and those we have still to read (our still to read books are a vast collection for both of us!)
Fave film this year
Greatest Showman
Last Year
Darkest Hour
We live in Spain now so going to the cinema has it challenges but we used to go to the Cinema at least x1 a month as one of our date nights! ?
I love books and movies.. too many brilliant movies to name
I love both! I try to read the book first because I don’t like to know the ending of a book. I think the Harry Potters are classic for fabulous book turned into excellent films.
I disagree – I like both books and films.
I do love both just not usually a fan of movies made from books especially if I have read the book first.
I love both! I find it better to watch a book adaptation film before reading the book, as then you can enjoy the better, written version after ? I don’t think reading and enjoying films are mutually exclusive!
Hugo
Both book and film are brilliant
The Children Act.
Just watched cloud atlas. My son said book was better.
I haven’t read the book, Jack has, then someone borrowed it, never to be seen again, he enjoyed it
I can name two! “The Usual Suspects” and “Stevie” (the latter was a film of a play by Hugh Whitemore about Stevie Smith. I wish I could get a dvd of it.)
Perfume. Adapted from the Patrick Süskind novel.
Atonement
Life is beautiful
A star is born
La confidential is s great book but the film is brilliant
Love movies!!! All of the star wars ! (Ok maybe not episodes I and II), strictly ballroom, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind and Elf is brilliant 😀
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
