He’s not really my cup of tea either

Aw that’s a real pity. Don’t sweat it if it isn’t for you. What were you reading?

the Ocean at the End of the Lane and Fragile Things

Ah well, maybe you’ll come back to them in the future. I have to say I loved The Ocean, such a powerful and rich story.

Please try Neverwhere, my first and favorite Gaiman book.

Steven

Have you watched and enjoyed any of the adaptations of Gaiman’s work?

I think the most approachable books are Stardust and Coraline. The other stuff is probably a bit too Gaiman-y for lots of folks.

Stardust was my first Gaiman, and I knew I was onto something and someone great.

Megan

Mine too.

@Kenny same

Mine neither. I almost feel guilty for not liking him! Admittedly I have only read his children’s books, but Coraline is probably one of the books I have ever read that I least enjoyed.

I loved American Gods and Anansi Boys! I’ve also read Stardust, which is not much like those books. I loved it too. The Ocean at the End of the Lane was a wonderful book. He has such a way with language.

Neverwhere was brilliant. I loved Mr Croup and Mr Vandemar.

It’s on my TBR list. What was it that put you off?

I started American gods, not too sure. I feel like I need to be taking notes and am probably missing details that aren’t being said.

The start is the toughest part if that book but stick with it. It turns into such an amazing story.

Sara

Don’t overthink it. Just read it.

My former roommate started it, hated it, then a while later, just picked it up, flipped to page 100, and kept going from there. It turned out to be one of her favorite books!

Deb

I do think I am overthinking it. I was lured into it by lots of discussion about the show and how knowing the mythology stories really make it. I know zero mythology.

Same here. Just couldn’t get him.

I love him 🙂 but that’s what makes reading so diverse and great. We all won’t like the same stuff 🙂

Give his Graphic Novels a try.

So jealous

Recently read Good Omens. Then had to re-read The Ocean at the End of the Lane. I’ve liked all his books that I’ve read but my adult daughter unequivocally does not. I think Neverwhere broke something in her brain when she read it. LOL.

I never liked Good Omens. I honestly cannot see why people seem to love it.

Fritz

I enjoyed it. Lighter than the rest of his stuff (thanks to Pratchett’s portions, I assume), quirky, loved the 4 horsemen. Maybe people like it because it’s a little more ‘accessible’? Idk. I’ve never read his graphic novels, somehow that doesn’t appeal to me at all. I may have to rethink that.

I found Good Omens to be sickly twee. I do appreciate it was two quality authors working together.

I loved Ocean at the end of the road.

I love Neverwhere, but I can’t seem to get more than a few chapters into any of his other stuff. No matter, there’s plenty to read in the world, read what you like!

Neverwhere is my favorite

I can’t do it either. Which is weird since all of my book friends love him.

Everyone likes different things. Don’t sweat it. Move on to read what you love, I always do.

Do you watch the TV show

1
Kevin

Just started it. Wasn’t really impressed does it get better after ep.1?

0
Cassandra

Ehhh, I don’t know that I’d say better. I guess it’s better when people start knowing he’s the devil

0
Cassandra

I have watched it since the beginning, so I guess I enjoy it enough lol

1
Kevin

I’ll keep going then.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane was my first Gaiman and I’ve loved him ever since. My daughter is obsessed with his wife, Amanda Palmer, so by default Neil Gaiman is HUGE in my house.

I have a friend obsessed with Tori Amos, on of his bffs. So I can relate lol

Loved that book too. Read it in one sitting! Graveyard Book is my favorite of his though

He’s not really for me either. I hated Neverwhere and got so bored reading Stardust (even though it’s one of my favorite movies). I did enjoy American Gods and parts of Trigger Warning.

I can’t really read his stuff (other than good omens). But his stuff works pretty well on audio.

I love when he narrates

1
Kenny

Agreed Cassandra, he has the best reading voice.

0
Matt

Agree 100% except when he does an American accent. Like I’m Trigger Warning. It did not fit

I feel like he’s better at short-form fiction. His children’s books and graphic novels tend to be pretty fantastic; I’m less thrilled with his novels. I will say that the TV adaptation of American Gods prompted me to read it again after 15-odd years, and it’s much improved upon re-reading.

I LOVEThe Graveyard Book and Neverwhere but wasn’t not overly impressed with American Gods. Coraline was really enjoyable too. Not sure what you’ve tried of his but might give one of those a shot if you haven’t yet. If it’s American Gods you were reading I could definitely see that.

I don’t like him either. I’ve read several of his books and I don’t understand why people love him.
