The Invention of Wings or The Mermaid Chair
I second The Invention of Wings
I think The Invention of Wings is even better than The Secret Life of Bees, especially since it is based on real people, the Grimke Sisters.

Just read Saving Cee-Dee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman which reminded me of the Secret Life of Bees.
That is a great audiobook for a road trip! Loved it!

I didn’t care for The Mermaid Chair but I adored The Secret Life of Bees and The Invention of Wings! ❤
Her nonfiction book “dance of the dissident daughter” was very fascinating to me and inspiring
