First Anita Shreve book I’ve ever read — just finished it last week in about two days. I enjoyed it. How does it compare to others by this author?

Anita Shreve always did a pretty good job. “Testimony” is very powerful, which some of my book club members didn’t like because of the sexual content. I was very sad the day she died. We’ll have no more books by this incredible author.

I’ll try Testimony and some of her other books. It’s always sad when we lose an author whose work we really enjoy. Ariana Franklin(real name is Diane Norman), who wrote Mistress of the Art of Death and several other historical novels, passed away several years ago. She’s one of my favorites, but I know there’ll be no more from her.

The end was a bit tidy for my taste, but not a bad quick read. If you want some context from the real deal, I would recommend checking out the 70th-anniversary articles from the Portland Press Herald: https://www.pressherald.com/2017/10/21/when-maine-burned-how-the-monster-fire-of-47-tested-mainers-resilience-and-altered-its-landscape/

Thanks so much for sharing the link!

Thanks –so interesting. I thought the book’s end was a little abrupt, too, and left questions unanswered, but it was still a good read.

I’ve been lucky here in California. So many areas, some nearby, have fallen to horrendous wildfires, in the past few years, especially. We’ve escaped this, so far, right where I live on the central coast. But we’ve often experienced smoky air from fires some miles away. The school I taught at in Watsonville experienced considerable smoke and falling ash from the Summit Fire. Two teachers at my site evacuated their homes, and our students had to stay inside for recess. The sunrises and sunsets were spectacular. I live on a hill with woods all around, so am always aware.

Anita Shreve’s books are ALL fantastic! I devoured every one over the years, whenever I got my hands on them. Her older books are great, if you haven’t read them yet.

Just put this in our neighborhood library! It was still there yesterday! Must have been too hot for visitors. Someone is in for a treat! Loved all her books!
