Was not fond of it myself but we all read from a different mindset. What some may love others may find boring. It is all good.

@June good point

@Linda Reading makes us more open minded and we can see things from different perspectives. Wish the rest of the World would do the same. We don’t always have to agree but just listen to the other side.

Keep going. Not all plots are obvious or even primary. Sometimes there’s just beauty, I think

This book was slow for me over all – I think it read easier after the first 150 pages. I did take a couple months break at about pg. 150. So many people loved it that I needed to get back to it. The last 100 pages made it worth while to me.

I loved how he outsmarted the communists and made a decent life for himself in the face of adversity. I agree that it was more character than plot driven.

Nothing dramatic happens–just go with it. I loved it. Amor Towles takes a restricted space and tells a story that really doesn’t need to go outside it.

Once I realized there was not much of a plot (and it took a lot of pages to realize), I could concentrate on the beautiful writing. Also, I loved how the character appreciated and observed all around him in his small world.

It was a strange month all around….and I’d gotten my copy from the library and was due back in 2 weeks….usually that’s plenty of time for a book but this one just wasn’t happening. After all the comments I may try downloading it someday.

2

I loved it. The pace was slower than a lot of books, but I found that part of its charm. It forced me to slow down a little. And I love the characters and the plot. Lovely book. I didn’t like his other one though.

@Kathleen I started once, quit, and started again. I am so glad I did! I think the combination of the Russian names, history, and the slower pace of the writing is the turn off for some. However, this character and his story are, in the end, just beautiful.

I Saw the author at Denver’s Pen andPodium series. He was fascinating-talked about the era of the grand hotel. He also chose that location because of all the political orgs all on the same square as the hotel.
