If double loading, to the back. If single loaded, to the front with all books level. Is it too much to have them sorted by author and then size (height) of book ?

Front always

You have them towards the front. Then, when removing the book, you push the two either side further back, so you can remover your required book without damage. The reposition the others.

Excellent Gill, plus it also cuts down on needless dusting ?

Depends on whether you have something else on the shelf, like a knick-knack, or money, or your photo……..or, more books.

@George there’s other things? Lol ?

I have a large family of elephants of varying sizes. It’s nice to say hello to the ones in front of a book, now and then.;-)

1
Donna

@George there’s just books on my book shelves x

0
George

Depends if you want to leave room to park a mug of coffee etc on the front. Librarians pull the spines to line up along the edge of the shelf to make it easy to find things. As a child I thought I was helping the librarian by pushing the books to the back. Exit embarrassed mum and me, pursued by anguished librarian.

Many moons ago when l worked in a library the books had to be right at the edge of the shelf.

2

Susan

Is there a reason for this @Norma?

0
Norma

@Susan we were never given a reason for doing it that way other than it looked neater.

Kerry

Mark says keep them at the front so as not to damage the back of the book case and considering he has just had to fix the back of one of ours he was right but don’t tell him is said that ffs.

Manuela

The ones at the front are the ones you’re going to read. Those pushed back you will never read. They exist only as visual ballast and to stop the good ones falling over…

To the front…those that I have in actual books. Most of my books are on Kindle
