@Chelsea about how crap it is? Yeah I would believe that.

@Morgan No, it’s actually been a lot of praise for it

Diana

@Morgan some people like it, some don’t. Just leave it at that – no need to call it crap ?

It’s all I seeeeeee ? I’m annoyed with YA books at the moment so seeing it everywhere irks me lol. But I get it ofc it must have a wide fan base 😀

I’m allowed to call it whatever I want. I think the series is crap and you think it’s awesome. Great!

Anyway cya on the flipside!

Female character that gives zero ffffs
Immense world building
Secondary characters with just as much back story
A+ witty banter

And they’re talking about it because all the Hulu deals came through

Not recently. Just the producers and stuff signed on, but it’s causing a new wave

@Anniina they are making it into a series???? I don’t have Hulu, but I will soon!!

I actually liked it quite a lot. I agree that the first book is weak, but I think it improved with each book. I liked the characters too – no one is all good, no one is all bad; there are grey areas and that’s interesting.

I loved the first two books. Third book was boring. Fourth book was like… okay wtf for me. And then I never continued and according to book review videos I’ve seen, I spared myself by choosing not to continue. I question that Sarah J Maas even knows what she’s doing at this point.

Empire of Storms is the best. Granted, that’s all I’ve read to.

She just churns out crappy books for the dollars.

Because the character development is fricken amazing and the world building is fantastic. Equal parts action, romance, politics, magic, and cool side characters. 11/10.

I am not going to be popular here but I really didn’t get on with Throne of Glass at all. I felt that the writer didn’t give any sense of the assassin that the main character was. Every test is over in a flash and she spends more time pouting over dresses. I won’t be bothering with the rest of them.

I felt the exact same way about the first book, and I promise that they get better! I honestly didn’t see what all the hype was about, but I’m really glad that I kept going, because each book in the series is better than the last. I don’t know if you know this, but the author was only 16 when she wrote ToG. Her writing definitely matures as the series progresses. Just some food for thought ?

1
Alexandra

@Diana I did not know that! Will consider looking out for the rest in that case.

It’s interesting in that those who like it, absolutely love it and those who didn’t get quite vocal about it!
Personally I really liked them. I enjoy the world building and the portrayal of the female characters.
It’s up to you though. People get quite divided over it so you’ll have to either take the plunge or ignore the posts about it!

Love the Court series….am having such a hard time getting through the Throne series.

@Jaynie the first couple books are rough. She wrote them when she was 15 or 16 I believe. They do pick up though!

@Ashley I’m committed to finishing Empire of Storms which I am on now…and will be deciding factor to pushing to finish the series. That’s impressive and I didn’t know that! I have a 13 year old writer, I ll have to tell her

@Ashley thank you! Just wow

I was amazed when I found that out! The last book of the series you really see her writing take a leap. I actually didnt love the last book, but I LOVED how her writing developed if that makes sense.

The first book wasn’t as great as the others but you can definitely see her growth as a writer as the series goes on. Her court of roses series became my obsession for the better part of a year

The first book was not very good, but a guilty pleasure. The second book was a genuine good time for me and you could see SJMs improvement as a writer. I DNFed the third book because it was so so boring. And idk what it is about SJMs protagonists, but I’ve hated both Celaena and Feyre.

Strong female lead that takes no shit from anyone and has the biggest brain ?? we all need a bit of that in our life

I koooooove this series! I haven’t read the last book yet. I love her interpretation of mythological characters and she also has great romance. Kickass women being badass. Lots of people seem to like A Court of Thorns and Roses better. I read the first in the series and it was okay, but I didn’t love it as much as ATOG. Happy reading!

Because I devoured the entire series in about a week. The character development is great over the entire arc of the series… for major and minor characters. The way the pieces all fall into place… anyone who doesn’t think this was a good series didn’t finish it. There was a lull in the middle you had to muck through but at the end… all makes sense and it was really really good. The main character is a vain, narcissistic girl who happens to also be an assassin and she is hard to swallow at first but once you realize this is part of her personality… it’s kind of funny to see celaena harping about dresses and her nails when she’s easily the most deadly person in the room.

I couldn’t get into it. I didn’t like the writing in the first book, but since I am seeing everyone say it gets better, maybe I’ll try again.

I just finished the series last month and i really enjoyed it. I actually tried once before to read the first book and couldn’t get into it. Then I read ACOTAR and loved it so decided to give ToG another try. I don’t think it’s the best series I’ve ever read but I still had a good time. Everyone who says they get better is correct. I’m excited about the comment in here saying the TV series is getting more buzz. I think it’d be cool to see it presented that way.

@Heather I let ToG go after book two and then let it go. But getting into ACOTAR convinced me to revisit. I had a good time, too, even with the series’ flaws.

Heather

yes I agree! For some reason I just connected with the story and characters in ACOTAR more but I have ended up loving both series in the end. I am excited for whatever she will put out next.

I mean to be fair the first book is quite boring. But she wrote it when she was 16. So for 16 yr old writing I thought it was quite well done. It took me three times read past the first book and power through. It gets better as the series goes along. And by book 3 I was hooked. The writing gets better, character development…everything gets better. Plus the main character is a total bad ass

I have a love/hate relationship with this series. I really love that as the “good guy” Celaena isn’t actually good and that doesn’t bother her. There’s no crisis of conscience or “I’m better than this” bull. When someone hurts her or her loved ones, she will torture their ass, kill them, and have no regrets. On the other hand, I despise SJM’s whole mate thing. Soul mates are fine, but the possesiveness and claiming nonsense makes me want to vomit.

And the end of the whole series bugged me. The absolute most undeserving character got way too much glory.

I like throne of Glass better than acotar, however by book 5, I’ve lost interest. I’m over everyone needing a significant other, I’m over every female character needing some tragic backstory to be strong and I’m tired of characters making choices like real people and being punished for it. ?

The books are soooooooo long but I’ve stuck with it because I actually really like the wold that she built. And the characters are great. You really care about what happens to them. But every time before I’d start one of the books, Id really have to mentally prepare myself for the amount of time I’m about to spend on one book (I on average do a book a week… these take up to two weeks!)

But I do believe they are worth it

Okay straight up it’s an awesome series! I loved it so much. The thing that stuck with me in this series was how strong they made the female lead. She didn’t rely on any man she pulled herself through it all

The hype has been there since she was first posting the series on http://fictionpress.com/ It was one of the most popular stories on the site for years, and it was a big deal in the community when she got a book deal.
