I think it depends on what you want from your reader. I have a first gen Paperwhite and I love it but the storage is abysmal. I’m saving up for an Oasis because I can not only get 32Gb of storage built in, but it has an SD slot where I can add another 256Gb of storage. I can keep my whole ebook library, and all my Audible books.

The oasis doesn’t have an sd slot

1
Tracy

How odd, I was sure I’d read that it did. Well that makes it a moot point for me.

Jessica

I have it and it doesn’t have one. I have the 32 gb and over 800 books and it’s not made a dent in my storage. I love it

Nope no SD slot in the oasis.

I have almost 400 books downloaded onto my paperwhite and I still have over 2gb of storage left. You can always take the books off the device if you’re worried about storage. I love my paper white. I read constantly as well.

1
Gretchen

Are you going to purchase books or use the library? I have zero storage issues since I use the library for much of my ebook reading. I have the Paperwhite and have really enjoyed it.

I wanted something easy to store books, especially in the summer, when my library doesn’t have what I’m looking for… I have a zillion books in my house!!!

1
Gretchen

I find having that I can easily move books on and off the device. So if you do want the smaller capacity it is doable.

I have a Paperwhite and it took me a couple of weeks to decide because I did a lot of research. The Paperwhite is absolutely great for the price. The Paperwhite has adjustable front light, is really lightweight, and holds a lot of books. The oasis has a 7” screen so it is bigger than the others, it also has a light and can store even more books, and is now waterproof. You can also use audible with the Oasis with ear buds. But the Paperwhite perfectly fulfills my needs because I decided I didn’t need the extra bells and whistles for that much extra price.

I‘ve had my paperwhite for four years and am more than happy with it. It‘s starting to show some signs of wear. The battery is down much quicker now, and there are two tiny pin-prick-sized flecks on the screen (like tiny holes — very bright). My fault, I‘m dragging the thing everywhere (also beach, etc.), read in the tub, and so on.
When I replace it, it will be with another paperwhite. ???
But I only need it for books. I don‘t need a color display or audibles. If you want that, I‘m sure they Oasis is pretty cool.

This is a huge help. I have a gazillion books in my house. I’m mainly looking for something I can grab and go with just books on it- nothing fancy. I’ve had a kindle Fire but not interested in all the videos, etc.

Just be sure to check the storage capacity. My Paperwhite has 2Gb, IIRC, and holds fewer than 1000 books. I have probably twice that which I want to store.

0
DonnaQuestion author

@Tracy I think they offer an 8g?

0
Tracy

@Donna I think you may be right, but I’m not certain. Might be the newest generation.

1
Jessicka

The 8 GB oasis fits thousands of books and the 32 GB fits a bit more

0
Mandy

I’m quite happy with my Paperwhite. I don’t see having issues with storage, because once I’m done reading I can archive it to the cloud. It’s so portable and light and the battery lasts forever! I had a Fire before and my eyes would get so strained and the battery was abysmal. So the Fire went to one of my kids!

I had the paperwhite and loved it but I’m planning to spend my summer by the pool so the Oasis made more sense in case I have an accident and drop it. I gave the paperwhite to my sister and just got the oasis. I bought the 32gb and champagne gold color to match my beats headphones. I haven’t paired them through Bluetooth yet so not sure how great the audio part is. I will say both are great all depends on your needs and budget. Happy reading

My husband bought me the graphite 32 GB oasis and now I want the gold and it’s back ordered ?

1
Marlene

@Jessicka I’ve been looking at the oasis since the waterproof came out but I kept waiting then I saw the gold one and couldn’t help myself. They have a trade in but I’m not sure if it’s worth it. They offered me $35 for the paperwhite I said much rather give it to my sister

2
Jessicka

@Marlene they have a trade in but not for the new oasis. I already traded in my paperwhite my husband is going to get me the gold one as soon as it becomes available. I have the silver one right now

2
Marlene

@Jessicka I posted the picture of my case on the other post

I LOVE my kindle oasis. It has audible capability and it’s water proof

Hi was the audio capability easy to navigate? I got my oasis on Thursday but haven’t set it up yet. I was reading the manual and so many steps I gave up. I figured I’ll go to YouTube and watch a video on how to (visual learner here lol)

1
Mary

@Marlene I’ll be honest. I haven’t used that part yet. I was most convinced to get oasis because it’s waterproof and I read by the pool a lot.

1
Marlene

Mary Pettit that’s the main reason why I bought mine too. My pool should be ready by May so I’m planning to be out there a lot. I’m not much of audiobook person but I want to try it. Thanks

2
Jessicka

@Marlene yes the audio feature is super easy to navigate.

1
Marlene

@Jessicka thanks I will look into this week

@Marlene I have used it a couple times.

The Paperwhite has much better battery life, but if you can afford the Oasis 2, you should get it. The build quality and specs are superior in every other way.

Amazon says weeks based on 30 minutes of reading a dayb

1
Michelle

This is true. I have a routine that makes sure I never run out of battery, but I can see it depleting a lot faster than the PaperWhite.

1
Jessicka

@Michelle what’s your routine? I just keep mine on airplane mode.

0
Michelle

Airplane mode and every night when I crawl into bed to read I start charging my stuff on the table next to me — phone, Kindle, and Kindle Fire. Sometimes the Kindle is charged every other day. Even with the battery indicator showing a faster depletion on the Oasis, it charges fast. I never have reason to worry that it’ll die before I can charge it, because it never gets low enough.

I guess I’m saying it’s easy if you just have an established time. It doesn’t have to be bedtime … it can be while you shower and get dressed for your day. Just doing that every few days means your Kindle will always be fully charged or close to it.

1
Jessicka

@Michelle it doesn’t bother me how fast it decharges. I use it and when it’s at 10% then I chatge it. I dont want to ruin the battery by charging it every night unless I’m going out of town & know I’ll be gone for a while with no charger

1
Pearl

I have started putting it on Aeroplane mode and noticed a positive change in the charging …thanks everyone for replying … Much appreciated xx

The paperwhite is a good choice. It has 6” screen. Very lightweight. Good battery life. It’s still very lightweight even with a case. Comes in 2 GB I believe and white or black. It’s a great ereader.

The oasis is also great to. It has the page press buttons, waterproof, audible and comes in 32 GB or 8 GB and it comes in gold and silver.

I chose the paperwhite in the beginning but then went with the oasis for my birthday and I love it. You could get they voyage which my mom has and likes. Personally I enjoy the oasis and it’s features.

My paperwhite lags a few seconds when I download.. can’t tell if it’s my connection or the kindle. There’s a few second delay when I scroll to turn a page when I’m searching for a book…

I can’t change the background color to off white.

Those are my only complaints. Mild and doesn’t bother me too much… I love everything else.

2
Reply
Jessicka

With the oasis you can change the background to black

2
Vivi

Have you restarted your Paperwhite recently? The lag is due to the low RAM, but if it seems to have gotten worse, restarting helps.

1
Jill

Vivi Ferris ohhhhhh good idea!! That’s funny because it’s the obvious thing I never considered. Thank you I will try it.

I know this is not one of the options you listed, but my wife and I both have the Kindle Voyage and are very happy! We call it the great compromise between the Paperwhite and Oasis.
? It is smaller and lighter than the Paperwhite, while still having the same screen size (6″).
? It has the same PPI specs as both the Oasis and Paperwhite.
? The screen is flush like the Oasis (not indented like the paper white screen is).
? The backlight has an automatic adjustable brightness depending on the lighting in the room. ? It has great battery life, like the paperwhite.
? It has the page press buttons on the side like the Oasis (both sides, instead of just one, unlike the Oasis.).
I think the Voyage merges together the best features from both models, minus being waterproof and the audible integration!

Jessicka

I have to agree the voyage is nice. My husband has one.

1
Jessicka

The only thing is that it’s not waterproof but that’s ok

1
Jordan

That and the audible integration, both of which I I am OK with not having. I do not take my Kindle by water very often, if at all. And I don’t really use audible since I prefer to actually read the books versus listen to them.

2
Jessicka

@Jordan which is totally understandable for some people those features aren’t worth it. I prefer the audible feature for when I’m nursing my new baby!

1
Jordan

@Jessicka I can understand that. If audible integration and/or being waterproof is important, I would definitely recommend the Oasis. But I think for most users that want the size and closer price point of the Paperwhite, but great features of Oasis, then the Voyage is the way to go.

2
Jessicka

Jordan Edwards oh yeah I definitely don’t try and force the oasis on someone. The price is crazy. I was given mine for a birthday present. I do believe the voyage is the way to go if you want to save money but want some of the features the oasis has and the paperwhite is a good kindle too that’s for sure. I would get the paperwhite over any kindle of the oasis wasn’t our.

Girl your telling me lol the only thing is I cant get the scrolling buttons to scroll when in the store

1
Kristy

I loved my paperwhite but when I would search for a book I would search on my fire….after scrolling 10+pages and you accidentally click a book is annoying and slow. Lol

1
Kristy

The funny thing is the scrolling buttons were almost the reason I didn’t order it. It looked off balance. Lol

1
Jessicka

@Kristy I agree I used to and have clicked on many books with my paperwhite and started them lol so the page buttons are nice but it would be nice to have them on both sides.

1

The Paperwhite is awesome. I can’t compare because I don’t own the Oasis.

Having had both, PaperWhite. I like the feel and design of it more. If it weren’t for my reading in the tub and it being a matter of when not if I drop my Kindle in the water, the Oasis would not be worth it.

So I have to ask. I am so old school and feel like I have to be able to touch a real book and flip pages….sounds ridiculous, I know! Have any of you successfully transitioned from being a core physical book reader to being an e-reader???

3
Reply
Jessicka

Yes I did. I strictly read kindle books and before that I read only physical books

2
Jordan

I was the same way a few years ago. I was completely against Kindles or any other Ereader because I loved the look, smell, and feel of a physical book.
Then a friend got me a Kindle for my birthday a few years ago, and I found I actually loved it.

While I still occasionally read physical books (mainly if they are cheaper than the Ereader version), my primary reading source is my kindle.

I love the ability to take all my books with me, I can look up words simply by long pressing the word, highlight favorite passages with a long press, and it is very portable. With the built in light, I can read in bed at night without disturbing my wife or having to go into another room. It also literally fits into my jacket pocket and I hardly notice it is there.

3
Vivi

I adore physical books and agree completely with all the merits of them, but an e-reader has a lot of advantages you wouldn’t think of until you read on one.

I often find myself missing being able to highlight words and having the definition immediately pop up of it when I do read physical books.

It’s also nice to not have to lug around a giant thousand page tome around and risk it getting damaged throughout the day, when my Paperwhite holds a huge multitude of books and still fits in my tiny purse/coat pocket.

3
Kristy

I read both. I usually buy whichever is cheaper or put myself on the shorter waitlist at the library. Unless it’s something I collect or I already have all of the rest of a series in one or the other. I like the set to be all ebook, all hardback, or all paperback.

4
Stefanie

It looks like I’m the odd one out. I do have a Kindle and also used it for a while but it has been lying abandoned for years now. For me it just took too much of that haptic feeling of holding a book away and I found I ended up reading only physical books again (without really consciously making that decision- I just used the e-reader less and less). But that’s just me and I know a lot of readers who prefer e-books now. ?

4
Megan

I have a paperwhite. It has 4gb of storage and I find that that is more than enough storage. If I start to worry about storage, I can archive all the books I’ve read. My paperwhite battery lasts almost an entire month between charges and I read a lot every single day. Whenever this one dies, I’ll be buying another one. I don’t think the waterproof and ability to listen to audiobooks makes the oasis worth the price different.

4
Reply
Vivi

Agreed. The extra bells and whistles aren’t enough to make up for the price difference. You can buy a PS4 for the same price as an Oasis 2, and that’s kind of insane for an extremely specialized device.

2
Megan

I hadn’t though of it like that! Yeah I love my little paper white. It does exactly what I need it to do! 🙂

3
Kristy

For me it wasn’t the waterproof or audio that made it worth it…It was the larger screen and amazing scrolling buttons. I do agree that Amazon has put it at a ridiculous price but I read 3-5 books a week so I went ahead and upgraded.

4
Jessicka

The price isn’t that great I’ll give you that

3
Kristy

@Jessicka I agree. Amazon overpriced the new oasis. Only diehard kindle ereaders fans will fork out the money. I think someone new to ereaders will be scared off by the price.

1
Jessicka

@Kristy oh yes I have to agree there. I am still giving my husband my 32 GB graphite one and buying the 32 GB gold one but price is definitely scary

0
Kristy

@Jessicka I wish my husband would read. Rose gold would be really pretty for the new oasis.

1
Jessicka

@Kristy oh gosh your telling me. My husband reads but he only reads a specific genre.

3

I agree. I considered the Voyage when it first came out but I didn’t feel it was enough of an upgrade for the price. Amazon has left the popular paperwhite out there at a decent price so it is very popular. I was waiting for enough features to feel it was worth it.

1
Jessicka

@Kristy I really did consider the voyage multiple times but my husband and I agreed the oasis was the better choice for me

I’ve had my Paperwhite for 4 years and i love it. I use it every day. I find i read more and faster with it. I still read and love physical books as well. Honestly I don’t see the point in having the Oasis as i have a regular tablet to listen to audiobooks on as well as my phone. I love the Paperwhite’s unique screen and e-ink over anything else besides a physical book.
