Keep an open mind. He writes from his viewpoint and childhood experience. There are valid points.

He’s definitely a Republican and has opinions and judgments for days 🙂

And very whiney. I hated the book and feel his opinions about Social Services workers were way off base. I was not a fan of the book.

Good idea. Book didn’t live up to the hype. Other books that may provide insight or differing perspectives…White Trash by isenberg and Men we Reaped by Ward.

I read White Trash, too. Long, but really explains so much about our country’s attitudes from the beginning!

We read it for Book Club, too, and it wasn’t my first choice either. But, I ended up learning and understanding another viewpoint. I liked it.

@Sarah I really liked it. I learned a lot, made me think, gives the history of the people and how their descendants are doing now. Social/Political/Family all interesting.

I enjoyed it. For me, it was a reminder to look at things beyond the surface, to not do things just because that’s the way they’ve always been done, to not assume my perspective is the only way of assessing a situation, and to be available to believe and encourage someone who needs and is open to same in their life.

I have not read it but I grew up in WV. I have read it is not an accurate representation. A sort of blame the poor for being poor. Will be interested. In your take.
