I quite like the film on a certain level. Books are different – you spend longer with a book. A good self-help book has the potential to be your best friend. A film rarely has that quality.
Wish she’d stayed in the ashram and not come out and then she wouldn’t have written the book and I would never have read it ? Having said that a friend of mine loved it ?
Self indulgent, irritating, awful. I get she was depressed and I empathize. But her inability to write in an insightful way – oh I’m ill, I must go to Bali – was incredibly patronising. I never finished it because I was genuinely disgusted. The worst kind of self help book – ‘worked for me cos I have lots of money’ Yuck!
I am surprised by these responses bc a lot of people loved it. (Not me) And it was highly promoted by Oprah. I remember her telling women they NEED to take time for themselves and go on a spiritual journey trip like this… as if that was remotely possible for a great majority of regular people, lol.
I delayed reading it because it did sound like many memoirs sound to me – er – self indulgent. (I’m sorry but for that reason I don’t often read memoir.) Nevertheless, I did eventually read it and, although there was some of that, I found it beautifully written and a little self-effacing and mostly worth the read. And while her “journey” was not one that I could wholly relate to, it was interesting.
I decided to try it anyway, I’m 60 pages in and I have giggled a few times! I hope I enjoy the whole book. I’m wondering if it depends on how your feeling in life to how you see it? X
Whiny dribble. (I really wanted to like it, but didn’t). I am sure I’m in the minority.
A self centered, whiny.
didn’t finish
Still can’t bring myself to finish it after I started reading it 5 years ago.
skipped to movie
Haven’t read it and for some reason I have no desire to see the movie.

I really enjoyed the movie and liked how it changed the way I think, I think I’ll start the book see how I feel in a few chapters x

Boring, boring, boring. Sorry.
Ugh
I started it years ago but still haven’t finished. I love the movie so I’m determined to finish the book lol
I found it quite boring other than the eating part
There are not many books that I can’t finish… Boring!
I couldn’t get through it.?
Didn’t finish it. But I really liked the movie
??
crap
I read it a good few years ago now, and enjoyed it. I saw it as travel writing.
Didn’t find it life changing, but I never find “life changing” books to be life-changing!
Depends on where you are at the time and What you are looking for.
Blah
I finished it but found it annoying
Nice descriptions of the places she visited. Otherwise, a long never ending complaint of an eternally questioning never satisfied woman !
She sounds like me ??
Boring.
??
I like the eat, but not the pray or love
Boring
Am I the only one who enjoyed it?!
It looks like it ? maybe it depends on your general mood in life at the time? X
No. I liked it, too!
I liked it, it inspired me to go to Bali.
Ugh, she got on my last nerve. So narcissistic. But my cousin said it changed her life….
It may work if none of the contributory factors to depression was financial…..
If you want a similar book that isn’t annoying with better writing check out “measure of my powers” by Jackie kai Ellis

Yuck!
That’s exactly how I felt.
Hated it!
I liked it but it was definitely not one of my favorites
Hated the book. Really liked the movie.

Hated it. Never finished, never will!
Awful. Me me me. Turned me completely off
Rubbish
You have better things to do with your time. ??♀️
I have to add that her latest book is superb. Read that instead.
The film was even worse!
They made Javier Bardem soooo pathetic.
And I thought it was Robert Downy Jr. at first.
??
Literally the worst book I ever read and I’m Italian which features in a third of the book so that’s saying something
Totally self-indulgent! Not my favourite book.
If 95% of people detest it – why did they make a movie and make this woman even wealthier?????
I am surprised by these responses bc a lot of people loved it. (Not me) And it was highly promoted by Oprah. I remember her telling women they NEED to take time for themselves and go on a spiritual journey trip like this… as if that was remotely possible for a great majority of regular people, lol.
@Ronda seriously.

Disliked
Loved the eat part; not so the rest
I decided to try it anyway, I’m 60 pages in and I have giggled a few times! I hope I enjoy the whole book. I’m wondering if it depends on how your feeling in life to how you see it? X
Nope.
Eat pray loved it…
Didn’t care for the main character. I give it 2 stars.
I liked it when I read it years ago but Elizabeth Gilbert also wrote A Signature of all Things which was a superb novel.
I loved it!
Loved it!!!
Dislike
Nope. It came across as pretentious and artificial to me. I didn’t… couldn’t finish it.
Love it. I guess you need to be in that situation to understand it. It’s really about finding yourself.
Like any book, you have to relate to it somehow.
??????
I enjoyed it.
It’s a real Marmite book but personally, I loved it.
Self indulgent rubbish
Which is a shame as she’s a good writer
She made up for it with her other book. The latest one.
Loved loved it… wow, I am the minority on this book..loved the movie also….
didn’t care for it
Rubbish!
It’s ok a bit self indulgent poor me but fun ?
I didn’t think it was poor me, it was more white privileged self righteous
“If I can do it so can you” bullcrap
