Okay I need help. My son is looking for recommendations for graphic novels. He’s 12, and he likes sci-fi, action, and war books. He is currently listening and reading Odd Thomas. Thanks

Shakespeare’s plays are available as graphic novels.

Locke and Key? It’s a bit dark, but I think it might be ok for a 12 year old. And Neil Gaiman?

Some Gaiman could work but many like Sandman aren’t very safe for this age.

A little different, but he might enjoy The Graveyard Book graphic novel. by Neil Gaiman. Some good suspense, some action, lots of ghosts, and mystery.

Sci fi there are marvel offerings like silver surfer or some fantastic four stories. As I’m British at his age I used to read 2000AD which had Judge Dredd and Rogue Trooper (which combines war & Sci fi). The main problem is most modern comics are aimed at 18+ audience, I’m reading a series called ‘Black Science’ which is good but maybe too mature. Or there’s always war comics like GI Joe which are still around and still popular after the recent movies.

Very popular in the Middle School library where I help out. And it’s a series, so if he likes one, there are more!

Although I tend towards the much darker side regarding graphic novels, I might suggest Battle Angel Alita. Think Blade Runner, but more graphically violent. Plus, it will prepare him for the sure to be popular forthcoming film adaptation.

I second Maus. I think a young person can get quite a lot from it. El Deafo is amazing and Lumberjanes is pretty good, strong female characters (always good for a young man to see in the comic genre) some mystery, humour and surprises. And funny too!

There’s a graphic novel version of “A Wrinkle in Time”. Looked through it and it seems to cover all important plot points.
