I have read the first two and I’d say you should go for 1984 first.

Yep… That’s A good one too… I’m a big fan of dystopian… If you haven’t tried these, make sure read ready player one and battle royale… I love these too

@Bisesh Fahrenheit 451 is literally my favorite book. Best book I’ve ever read.

1
BiseshQuestion author

Very good choice.

Justin

That’s not fair, because all three hold a valuable perspective. A kind of harsh reality and warning to an entire generation of reader’s. I guess if we’re speaking from a subjective view, I’d say it’s a tie for me between 1984 & Brave New World.

1

I wanted to know the general opinion, so I posted it… 1984 wins for me

1
Justin

The dialogue is important. I’d say Brave New World worked an inch better for me. Maybe I’ll read it again in a year or two? See what kind of an effect it has on me then.

0
BiseshQuestion author

Yeah… But I admit I 1984 got me scared…

1
Justin

Sounds like the book did it’s job. Lol

I’m serious

1

No, I believe you. It’s terrifying, but I think that’s Orwell’s goal.

1
Holly

I agree it’s a tie between 1984 & brave new world (:

2
Justin

I’d say instead thinking about which one is better, one can think of how both stories work together at what their trying to teach?

0
Wendy

1984 reminds me the most of what is happening in the world today.

I agree, however not so exaggerated. I think the other extreme from Brave New World is very present too. Kind of a realistic mixture between the two, really.

1
Wendy

I guess that is the key to good dystopian literature. It is an exaggerated reflection of the world to help us become more aware of issues. Also, serves a a great back drop for a character or characters to grapple with the moral decisions such a world imposes

2
Patty

Hmmm. You could read them in order of when they were written.

I’ve read them all… And so I want to know the general opinion… 1984 Is the best for me…

1
Patty

I like them all. Hmmm. Maybe 1984. But I guess Hunger Games if one is looking for a lot of action and excitement. I think I’d go with the other 2 first.

Okay….

Hunger Games is the strongest dystopian, the others are too close to reality for me. But it’s interesting to read everyone’s thoughts!

0
Suzanne

They weren’t that close to reality when written though.

0
Sherri

I’d rather hang out with the folks in Hunger Games but 1984 is definitely the better book

I would say Hunger Games. I realliy like the whole set (plot, characters, writing, …).

I found 1984 much more readable than brave new world. Also felt a much stronger connection with the characters, really cared about winston and related to him in some ways. fahrenheit 451 is another good one.

I’ve heard that The Mandibles is really good, have it in my Kindle but not time to read it yet. https://www.amazon.com/Mandibles-Family-2029-2047-Lionel-Shriver-ebook/dp/B01824RDKK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496355272&sr=8-1&keywords=the+mandibles

@Patty I’ve seen that a few time in book stores, and always flirted with the idea of getting. Does sound really good though, only my lack of funds and my already falling mountain of books stopped me.

It was recommended on Dr. Morris Berman on his blog… he has written a triology about the downfall of the U.S. – his last book being Why America Failed. Good reading, but not cheery!

Brave New World.
I felt that Brave New World had a far better scope of the world, and better story, than 1984 without being so far from potential futures as Hunger Games.

This one. Against the Fall of Night by A. C. Clark…my favorite Sci fiction. Although you may have to look for it under The City in the Stars as he expanded it.

We by Evgeny Zamyatin. It came years before 1984 or Brave New World and was a big inspiration for both of them.

Really? I thought it was other way around. I’d have to research that before it drives me crazy. Lol

0

Yes, We by Zamyatin was the inspiration of those two great books. It was published in 1924, while Brave New World is from 1932, and 1984 was written in 1948 and published one year later.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_%28novel%29

I’m studying 1984 and Brave New World so I suppose I didn’t read them out of choice. Hunger Games though was definitely more uplifting than the other two. They are all really good though with their constructed societies!
