Great question!
I would say “Circe” by Madeline Miller. I adore her. Her writing style is so beautiful and entrancing. I finished the book in 2 Days. Which is fast for me nowadays considering I have a toddler. ?

It’s pretty good! It’s one of those deals on Amazon if I remember correctly and here is the synopsis that got me instantly hooked: “Jayne is my sister.
Johnny is her boyfriend.
A week ago he murdered me.
Today he put Jayne in the hospital.
Tomorrow he’s going to die.
I’ll make sure of that.”

I like Stegner. Have you read William Maxwell? He’s of the same era and very good.

Ah? Thanks for that – I’ll have a look! I found Stegner by accident when I was investigating books for my New England trip…he’s pretty much unknown in Australia, so he was a lucky find.
