I was a 10 year little girl, who loved libraries and books. One afternoon after school, I was at a neighborhood library in Chicago and I spied a brand new book with a bright orange cover. I took it off the shelf, checked it out and took it home.
The book I found was a biography of Joseph Pulitzer.
I loved it and have never forgotten the thrill of taking my treasure home and reading it from beginning to end.
This book was my first and only biography. From there I moved on to spies, crimes and mysteries?
ANGELA’S ASHES, THE GLASS CASTLE, A SENSE OF WHERE YOU ARE, SILENT SPRING, WALDEN, IN COLD BLOOD, A ROOM OF ONE’S OWN, THE RIGHT STUFF, OUTLIERS, THE PRINCE, THE REPUBLIC, THE INTERPRETATION OF DREAMS, DIARY OF ANN FRANK, MEDITATIONS, COLLECTED ESSAYS OF GEORGE ORWELL, THE SECRET LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS, THE ART OF WAR, BLACK BOY, CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE, BATTLE CRY OF FREEDOM, THE WOMAN WARRIOR: MEMOIRS OF A GIRLHOOD AMONG GHOSTS, APOLOGY, RIGHTS OF MAN, THE EGO AND THE ID, SLOUCHING TOWARDS BETHLEHEM, ON WRITING, ESSAYS OF E. B. WHITE, A LONG WAY GONE: MEMOIRS OF A BOY SOLDIER. ZEN AND THE ART OF MOTORCYCLE MAINTENANCE, THE TIPPING POINT, NIGHT, PILGRIM AT PINKER CREEK, THREE CUPS OF TEA, NARRATIVE OF THE LIFE OF FREDERICK DOUGLASS, and KAFFIR BOY. It’s too hard to pick.
Cheryl Strayed’s Wild. It’s more of a “don’t try this at home, folks” cautionary tale than an inspirational one; still, it did inspire me to want to try the Pacific Crest Trail or some other, similar long hike someday. Although with a bit more planning and a couple of companions.
The Diary of Anne Frank, The Story of My Life (Helen Keller), An Interrupted Life (Etty Hillesum), The Journal of Hélène Berr, Richard III by Paul Murray Kendall, The Sisters who would be Queen by Leanda de Lisle – that’s all I can think of off the top of my head.
Carrie Brownstein’s memoir
Long Walk to Freedom.
