Shutter Island. Then I wouldn’t have had to throw it out the window.

I loved it till the end (and love Lehane generally) – I was just hoping he’d come up with something more unexpected for the ending.

1
Michael

He’s a terrific writer, I think.

1
Michael

Definitely.

The problem with Shutter Island is that it was as plain as the nose on your face from the begining what the ending was 🙁 I was really disappointed

0
Michael

That was my problem, really. I was hoping he’d come up with something unexpected (though in fairness no idea what that might have been!).

I loved it but like I say, !it’s maybe not an appropriate mention on a crime book club.

It’s fine Gail. It is still a book you wished had a different ending!

1
Suzanne

It would not have the same impact.

I’ve read 4 and can’t remember what one I was puzzled over the ending

1
Jo

Having upset you all now 🙂 I’d say Tale of Two Cities although I appreciate that there is no other ending really

First time I read it, I kept waiting for the punch line! Yes, even then,at a young age apparently I had set my mind to crime thrillers! After I finished the story, I read it again years later and could enjoy the descriptions and Dicken’s style!

2
Julie

Ok, not crime fiction but : A Suitable Boy

Many, many years ago I read Daphne du Maurier’s Frenchman’s Creek and, due to it being an old copy, had no idea that the last page(s) was/were missing. So I believed there was a happy ending .. when writing the synopsis for class, I had to check a name and borrowed a copy .. to find out the story went on!!! Was devastated!

Captain Corelli’s Mandolin . After all the misery you have to plod through in the book about the awful war in the mountains, you deserve a happy ending like the film.

A Farewell to Arms by Hemingway. There’s a reason why Bradley Cooper throws the book out of the window in Silver Linings Playbook!
