Jack Whyte. He has an Arthurian series that is based more historically than fantasy, and he has a Knights Templar series as well. Maurice Druon has a fantastic series of books. There’s also Ken Follet, Tracey Chevalier, Umberto Eco, Sharon Penman, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (no, I am serious, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is the writer of such fantastic historical fiction, it’s unreal), Sarah Dunant, Bernard Cornwell, and Patrick O’Brian. Just to name a few writers that I am familiar with in historical fiction. That isn’t including the Medieval mystery writers that are part of my historical fiction shelves. Michael Jecks, Bernard Knight, and Candace Robb to name a few of those. I don’t know what you mean by the other ‘sweetshop’ books. I’ve never heard of that term before… If none of these match what you are looking for, then just let me know and I’ll hunt the shelves for something else.
Just finished “The Liar’s Gospel” by Naomi Alderman; reading “The Secret Chord” by Geraldine Brooks. Both are fictional retellings of Biblical stories – the life of Jesus, and the life of King David, respectively.
Like Honeydukes?
Ahhhh, no. That Harry Potter thing!
lol
I’m looking for suggestions
