How about All the Light we cannot see by Anthony doerr? Or the Zookeeper’s Wife, or Little Bee by Chris cleave? And if you somehow missed it, Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd is amazing.

@Julia read two of them. The other two are too sad?

Julia

I’m guessing Little Bee and Zookeeper’s Wife are the sad ones? Let me think. How about Remarkable Creatures or Fallen Angels by Tracy Chevalier?

Oh I loved Bee, though I thought the ending was terribly sad. You might like his newer book, All the Brave are Forgiven.

It is hard to recommend books if you don’t know someone’s taste. I always give gift cards to my local independent bookstore to people as gifts. I love anything by Barbara Kingsolver, Celia Ahern, Amy Tan, Lisa See and Alice Hoffman. I also love Pat Conroy, Anne Rivers Siddons and the Number 1 Ladies Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith.

My mom keeps telling me to read Hotel. I’ve lived less than a mile from the actual Hotel in the book for 15 years… so maybe I should.
