If you want something deep and thoughtful, anything by Amy Tan. My book club did the Joy Luck Club last year, and then watched the movie.

@Mary I did read the Madonnas of Leningrad and enjoyed it very much. Cellist is similar (with the siege theme) but also very different. Told from 4 different points of view. Very powerful. It’s a book that stays with you. I rarely reread books, but I read it twice.
