I completely forget which book it was that I read recently, but I slammed it shut when I was done and told my husband that was the worst ending I’d ever read.

Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders. Blew me away. Had it on audio and had no idea what I was listening to – almost quit- but did some research first. Love anything connected to Lincoln and I love graveyards so I stuck with it and oh my…. The audio was an amazing production and I have never heard or read anything like this book. It has stayed with me for months!!! I bought the paper copy to have it in my hands to look back at!

A Dog’s Purpose. I ready it many years before the movie came out which didn’t do it justice. I cried because of sadness at the first chapter and cried with joy at the last chapter.

And though I admit to only having seen the movie and not reading the book, this quote is from both. From ‘Marley and Me’ this paragraph kills me. It’s so true and poignant and sweet:
‘A dog has no use for fancy cars, big homes, or designer clothes. A water logged stick will do just fine. A dog doesn’t care if you’re rich or poor, clever or dull, smart or dumb. Give him your heart and he’ll give you his. How many people can you say that about? How many people can make you feel rare and pure and special? How many people can make you feel extraordinary?’

I thought it was just going to be a fluffy easy to read contemporary when I started. Next thing I know I’m bawling my way through most of it. It was just incredibly relatable, I’d never read a book before with so many “that’s exactly how that feels” and “yup been there done that” moments.

AN AMERICAN MARRIAGE blew me away!

I gave up on THE FAVORITE SISTER after 100 pages. Too many characters and a mishmash of a plot. BTW, I’m reluctant to name names because I’m sure the writer poured her heart and soul into the book. It received tons of positive media attention; perhaps it just wasn’t my cuppa tea.

Haven’t tried this one, but I’m often amazed at books that get great hype and I try to read it and think – what am I missing?

1
Susan

I usually take most Amazon reviews with a grain of salt, although I usually write one. I’ve gotten to admire a few reviewers who share my taste in books and was curious to see what they said. This was one time when I should have read the reviews before purchasing the book. It was panned by the reviewers I respect. To be fair, though, some readers really liked the book.

Reading this now & not impressed.

0
Alexandra

@Elisabeth any particular reason?

0
Elisabeth

@Alexandra Yes- several. Poor editing. Way too many redundant phrases (for example, she compares setting to a fairytale 3X I first 5 chapters). Schizophrenic narrative – what’s the main plot vs supporting? Use of third person omniscient was klunky. I’m writing a blog post now. I’ll post when I’m done.

1
Alexandra

@Elisabeth I did the audiobook so I probably missed some of that. The one thing that really drove me crazy was the “TSHTF” phrase bc that takes just as long to say as what if stands for, but overall I enjoyed the story.

1
Elisabeth

@Alexandra I listened to it, too. If I had been reading the physical book, I probably would have abandoned it.
