So ruin it. Made the whole story predictable . I remember reading the book and saying what the h just happen?? And had to read it a few to finally accept it. Loved the book.

1
Amy

Same. That was some bullshit

2
Stacy

I didn’t watch the movie. Glad of it now.

1
Katherine

The changing perspectives and the ending are what made the book so good. I remember when the movie came out. I ask everyone about the ending. I still haven’t watched it.

0
Kadie

@Katherine same here and these posts confirm I’ve made the right decision in not watching!!

Well, they had to since the’ve gone beyond the books that have been written.

0
Kathi

@Jillian this is totally true! However some things before that point were super different to the point of leading down a completely different road than the books (which was inevitable I know) such as who married Ramsey, the lack of lady stoneheart, and some of what happened at the red wedding

I cannot tell you how angry I was – I LOVED the book, the movie came out my birthday weekend and I was SO excited and then…this is when I learned 99.9% of the time the book is best and don’t go to the movie, don’t do it!!!

1
DB

I read it in high school, loved it, told my parents OMG you have to read this. Then the movie came out and I was PISSED lol.

1
Cindi

I don’t remember why I was so mad but I know I was!

1
DB

And isn’t it funny it’s been 25 yrs and I haven’t read the book or watched the movie agsin almost that long and it was instantly the first one that popped in my mind when I saw the question lol.

1
Kelly

Same!! Now I’m mad all over again just thinking about it!

2
DB

@Kelly I Know right? Lolol

OMG yes!!! Hate that movie and loved the book, all of the books. Movie was so terrible!!

1
Kathy

I remember when it was released and I was so excited. My jaw was on the floor the entire time. They combined books, changed the story, etc. I love love love those books and that movie was a tragedy.

4
Melissa

its funny for me because I loved every single one of Sophie Kinsellas books except for Shopaholic but I had already seen the movie. I wonder how I would have felt if it was in reverse. I only read the first in the series because I was so annoyed with it I didn’t want more.

0
Kathy

That has happened to me. If I have seen the movie, I can’t tolerate the books. I have to read the book first or else I’m a lost cause

0
Kelly

I was SHOCKED by how much they changed. I saw it in the theater, and I only saw it the one time because I remember thinking, “Uh, that was nothing like the books I fell in love with.”

Movie “Enemy” based on Jose Saramago’s book The Double.

Not completely different but I hated that Neville didn’t have his full sword scene at end of Deathly Hallows movie. It was perfectly written to give him a powerful scene them the film botched it.

Marley & Me

0

Kelly

Can you explain this one to me? It’s been a while since I’ve seen the movie, but I thought they were fairly faithful to the memoir… I could be misremembering though.

0
Carla

SPOILER ALERT

0
Carla

As I recall the book ends with how they lived life after Marley died and got another puppy. The movie ends when Marley died. Horribly sad and not how it should have ended!

0
Kelly

Ah, okay. Yeah, I think the reason why they didn’t do that is because the family actually waited almost a year before they adopted another dog. There was one shortly after Marley’s death that they looked into, but ultimately that dog ended up not being a good fit for their family (if I recall correctly, she had been abused or something? And the rescue didn’t want her to go to a home with small kids like they had?).

I can understand why you didn’t like the way they ended the movie. I thought the ending quote – about how there’s something special about a dog that makes you feel so loved – was beautiful and perfect. I also think that there are some people who would have been mad if they had showed the family adopting another dog – I can hear the internet cries of “you can’t just replace him like that!” ha ha. It does make me ugly cry though, which is why I haven’t seen the movie in a while.

0
Carla

I think I need to reread it! 🙂

0
Kelly

I did a reread a year or two ago and it still holds up <3

0
Kelly

@Shanna oh yeah, that’s another one!

1

@Kelly lol
Which one were you thinking?

0
Kelly

@Shanna Ready Player One was the first that came to mind, but there have been a few that were so different I couldn’t even compare them anymore. Part of me actually prefers when that happens, because it becomes impossible to compare the book to the movie. The other part of me really wants to see what happened in the book!

0
Shanna

@Kelly that’s true! I agree on ready player one.
But yes! I liked Jurassic Park the book AND the movie… because they were not the same lol.

0

I’ve read that Walt wanted to do The Little Mermaid while he was alive, and keep the ending true to the book. I wonder how that would have turned out. ?

0
Jennifer

@Adrienne, what is the true ending?

0
Andrea

@Jennifer SPOILER ALERT: She dies. The prince marries another woman (a totally innocent, non-evil woman) and the only way her sisters can save the little mermaid is by trading their hair to the sea witch (not an octopus) for a magic knife. When the prince’s blood splashes her feet, it will become a tail again. So the little mermaid goes to kill him in his sleep, but she loves him too much to be able to do it. So when the sun comes up on the last day, she is turned into foam on the waves, forever following him in his ocean travels. It’s beautiful.

5
Adrienne

@Jennifer she doesn’t win the prince and turns into sea foam. ?

I think at the end of the book it was clear that Andy&the bf broke up, but the movie was more of a Hollywood, they-may-get-back-together ending? It’s been a loooong time since I read the book though, so I could be wrong!

0
Kelly

Miranda also was not nice to Andy at all in the end and, if I’m recalling correctly, she tried to blacklist her all over the city at other publishing place. I think the only reason Andy got her next job was because the person hiring her had also worked for Miranda and hated her…. but it’s been many years since I read it, so I could be recalling these details incorrectly.

Two come to mind. The first was not a movie, but a play. “Wicked.” While both the book & the play were fantastic, the book was a whole lot darker than the play, but I was ok with it because it made sense for the play to be lighter.
The other was Michael Connelly’s “Blood Work.” In the movie, the serial killer was not even the same person as in the book.
