I love historical fiction as well. I have read “The Book Thief” which is my most favorite book for years. Then I also read “All the Light We Cannot See”. Another masterpiece. “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” follows next. And, I’m reading “The Nightingale” by Kristin Hannah and I’m loving it to bits. Already added to my top favorites. Any of the above books will make him elated, I guess. ?

The Kingsbrige Trilogy by Ken Follett. About 3,000 pages. That’ll keep anyone busy for a while.

How old is he? There is some good stuff out there but a lot is quite dark.

@Alessandra ah excellent. I just finished Neal Stephenson’s “Baroque Trilogy” which is sort of “historical almost science fiction” – it covers 1640ish to 1715, and delves into politics, economics and science, but has a rollicking sex and violence pirate story through the middle of it. It was awesome.

@Alessandra IT the best read I’ve had in ages. There is an earlier book, Cryptonomicon on a similar them, but set in WW2 and “now” that these are sort of prequel to. Theoretically you should read that first, but I don;t think its essential and it is very computer geeky

I’m not really mad on historical fiction so imagine my surprise when Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel turned out to be completely immersive

The Religion by Tim Willocks. An absolute gem of a book, set during the siege of Malta, it balances great research with a zesty, sexy, swashbuckling page-turning story.

I don’t know his age….someone suggested the series by Bernard Cornwall to me, starting with the Saxon series. Depending on your son’s age, may be worth looking into? My son read Stephen Pressfield in high school if I remember correctly.

Erik Larson writes really great nonfiction history books that read like fiction. Dead Wake and Devil in the White City are especially interesting. Schindler’s List is also a great nonfiction book that reads like fiction. For actual historical fiction, The Paris Architect was amazing.
