My mum always reads the last few pages of the book before the rest. Is this a thing or is she just odd ??‍♀️

I would never do that, but know a few people that would!

Odd.

I couldn’t do that. It would ruin the book for me.

I sometimes open the book and read the very last sentence or two. I think the words an author chooses to end a book are so important… At the same time, I hate spoiling a whole book so I try not to read too much to give everything away. That’s not fun! I’m telling you though, if those last few words or sentences are good and still cryptic enough, it can make reading the rest incredibly exciting. I only really do this if I’m picking random books I haven’t heard of or don’t know anything about ?‍♀️ I do think it’s odd, though. I’m just glad I’m not the only one ?

I do that too! If I’m gonna pick up a book I’ve never heard of I might read the last couple of sentences just to see if there is a resolution! 😛

Same here for the same reason … We are not so odd after all

I know some do but I just couldn’t. I mean why spoil the ending ? 🙂

Not odd at all. I do it. Of course, as a historian I always know how the main story ends from the get go.?

In the movie When Harry met Sally, Billy Chrystal’s character did that!

I actually know 2 people who do this but odd…lol

I know of many who do that. I’ve been told by some that it gives them an idea of whether or not they’ll like how the story goes. This makes no sense to me, and I grin when they try it with the novels I write, because there’s no way to figure out the story from the ending. I would never do so myself.

Depends on the book, if its one I’ve been waiting for for quite awhile I will read the end first. Mostly b/c I want to know how it ends but I don’t want to rush through reading to get there because then it is over too fast.

I like to see how the thread of the story holds together. By reading the ending first, I can trace that thread. If a story zig zags too much, I am less inclined to finish it. I mean, a surprise ending is nice and to be relished, but an ending that comes out of left field is kinda a let down. Almost like the author is saying “gotcha”. I will be less inclined to purchase another of their works.

I can kinda see this, especially with mystery novels! I don’t want the bad guy to be super obvious but also don’t want it to be the random person that was vaguely mentioned in one scene. It’s gotta be something I could figure out of I piece the clues together properly. But I still can’t read the last page lol.

Odd. But bless her anyway let her do her

My brother reads the first chapter and last chapter. Then he decides if he wants to read the whole book.

✋… I do too, if the ending peaks my interest it might be worth reading to figure out what happened.

Oh no! I don’t think I could read it if I had read the ending. I can’t read a book that’s got a movie based from it if I’ve seen the movie first… but that’s just me!!

Noooo ??? lol I dunno I guess if that’s her thing but I feel like I’d spend the whole rest of the book trying to figure out how it connects to the end instead of just enjoying the story

Me too. It’s the one thing I hate about audiobooks- it’s too hard to skim the last chapter. I need to know what I’m investing in. The only novels I don’t do it is mystery- cause otherwise what’s the point?

I did this for years! I don’t anymore. I didn’t want to waste my time on a book with a weak ending.

Confession time: I have, on occasion, flipped to the last page just to get a sense of whether the ending is gonna go the way I think, or other times, if I can get out of finishing the book.

I often do that! It just makes me able to enjoy the book MORE because now I can stop being anxious that some character is going to die or some outcome I don’t want is going to happen.

My mom does that, she also insists that if she enters a house she must leave through the same door or it brings bad luck. ?

Valerie

Or, you have to say, “Bread and butter, bread and butter. In one door and out the other.” That will prevent bad luck.

1
Lisa

@Valerie I will pass that on to her.

My father does that too! I just groan and go away. We have a saying: to teach prayers an old goat… Impossible. 😉

I read the first half of the first sentence of a book then the last half of the last sentence of a book. If it makes sense generally it ends up being a pretty good book, lol.
