My husband is trying to talk me into reading the Lord of the Rings books. Are they worth it?

My husband is trying to talk me into reading the Lord of the Rings books. Are they worth it?
A million times yes!
Loved the Hobbit, struggled with the others !
@Annette definitely this!
The Hobbit was great; the others drag. Lots of breaking out in song, which is weird for a book.
Too many descriptions of imaginary things for my taste. Not enough character development and actual story. I found them boring. I had no problem with Les Miserables and War and Peace, so my threshold for slow is usually quite high.
What made me fall in love with reading in the first place.
Yes!! Some of my absolute favorite books.
Great books. A thoroughly developed world to immerse yourself in.
I did the audio versions. It was a great way to get through the slow parts.
Everyone has different tastes, but unfortunately, I’m not a fan of The Lord Of The Rings.
They are the best. Tolkien is from another dimension and his writing is magic.
In a word Yes! As said start with The Hobbit.
I think they’re great stories, but I don’t personally enjoy the writing style. My middle son and husband love the whole series.
My boyfriend is a massive LOTR fan, and while I had watched the movies and enjoyed them I hadn’t read the books. I wanted to read them to show interest in something that’s important to him. I couldn’t get through them, they are just so slow and extensive. Then I got them as audiobooks and it was amazing! So, if you are gonna try to get into them I recommend audiobooks.
I cant believe you even had to ask. ?
I mean I’ve never even watched the movies ?. A simple yes or no would have worked for me.
Hobbit first
These books made me fall in love with reading. The Hobbit is wonderful but you don’t need to read it first
So much walking, pages and pages and pages and pages and pages and pages of walking and more walking
@Donna just like the movie!
I also ket getting Sauran and sauraman mixed up (or whatever they were called) the names were just too close lol
Yesss they are! Long winded if you aren’t used to that sort of book but they are very amazing
Do it! You won’t regret it!!!!
My friend @Sarah has read them and enjoys them tons. My husband, @Eric, I think has, also.
Yes.
Omg yes do it!
Yes
Yes
Absolutely
Yes
You’ll never know unless you give them a go.
Recommend the Hobbit first. …study the maps….and you will be taken to magical..mystical ..can’t put it down adventure …
Great books…The Hobbit is the one which is the beginning of the story but I didn’t enjoy it as much as the others…
It’s good but you have to stick with it. It’s hard to get it rolling ?
Yes!
They are not an easy read. I just couldn’t do it.
Totally !
I loved them! My 4th grader jumped in and read The Hobbit and loved it too!
Definitely
Afraid they were just NOT for me. I DID try and am only too aware, that other readers adore them. Each to their own!
Amazing!!!!! Long but so worth the read!
Yes!
Ah no.
I love the Hobbit.
It took me three attempts to read through the first book of LOTR. I struggled and read them but hated them.
Hours I can never get back.
Not for me
I loved them, have read them 15 times from the 70’s
Loved the Hobbit as a child tried to read LOTR as an adult ( my husband loved it ) but really didn’t enjoys it ?
of course they are.
friendship. honor. bravery.
Most definitely!!
Not for me.. I really do not see a picture in my mind with those endless descriptions.
Yes!
I read them as a young adult and adored them. Hobbit first if you can. I’ve read them 3 times since and am thinking it’s about time I read them again.
Of course they are!!!
No.
I trudged through them but not really my style. Films were amazing though!
Tolkien is not for everyone. It’s brilliant and I love the stories but truly struggled to get through the extra geography and genealogy.
I have never read them, but if you do not get on with them you can always stop. X
Totally
It’s one of the top fantasy series ever.
Yes!!
Yes
No!!! Total torture
Never
Your husband should know you better than anyone else on here… Listen to him
@Johnny stay out of it.
I teach English and I hate that book. But my nerdy husband loves it.
@Vicki, trophy wives should be seen and not heard.
@Johnny ❤️
no
I’m so sorry I have no idea where that came from
Yes
Yes. They we’re what got me hooked into fantasy ☺️
I think it’s good to start from the hobbit as it gives a nice introduction. And yes, Tolkien is not for everyone but you’ll know that after few chapters ?
It completely depends on your reading preferences. I thought they were fantastic books and really well-written. But I also love fantasy-adventure novels. If you’re into those types of books, I’d say you should definitely add it to your reading list.
I think I’m going to give them a try. I’m reading the Miss Peregrine series right now, and like to plan ahead on what to read next ?.
YES.
YES!!!!!!!! Omg my soul! I love them so much!
YES!!!
YYYEEESSS!!!
I found them very difficult and hard to get through.
The story is amazing but Tolkien’s writing style can be a bit of a drag I skip read like I do with King
No
I’m a massive fan of the movies and decided I needed to read the books. I did and was completely underwhelmed. I also read the Hobbit and loved it. But that was because at that point I hadn’t seen the movie. So, I guess if you haven’t seen the movies, then yes, read the books. Otherwise I wouldn’t bother
Hard to say what you’ll think as an adult as I read it mid teens. I loved it so much, I didn’t read another book for two years. At that age, it was just the story and the characters. Had I been older and know what I know now, maybe I’d have been more critical, but to me it was perfect. Obviously you need to enjoy fantasy.
I personal love them…
NO!
I wouldn’t but it depends what you like
I love them, but I’m a fantasy fan.
Mostly a man book
Sooo long. Soooo boring.
My husband loved them. But I didn’t really care for them. I did like The Hobbit though.
I need to get new glasses.. I read my husband is trying to talk dirty to me with lord of the rings ???
I love them!
I tired Tolkien is to wordy for me. Idk way to descriptive I guess would be the best way to say that, not wordy. Lol
I read The Hobbit at a friend’s urging just to be polite. To my surprise, I devoured it and The Lord of the Rings.
They are on my tbr list
Yes
I tried so hard but just…no.
YES. MOST DEFINITELY.
I find with fantasy i am always chasing that Lord of the rings high ?
I read them all in my early 20’s and really enjoyed them. I am not so sure that I would like them so much now. Give it a try!
I loved them but they are long
Yes
Yes
no
no
Yes
Yes
no…
Hell’s yes
I loved them! More than the Hobbit, actually.
Absolutely. Enjoy!
Amazing!
It’s an intricately woven mythology and an intriguing adventure of a journey on par with Homer’s Odyssey & Illiad
Yes.
Read them when I was 12 yrs old.
Totally yes!! I absolutely love that series…
I hated it!
Not my cup of tea.
Fabulous recommendation from the Husband ?
Yes!!!
Brilliant
It’s maybe worth giving it a try just to keep him quiet lol. Best can happen – you love the book and it enhances your mutual bond. Worst can happen – you think omg! We are so fundamentally different! Lol
Yes… it really was. Read it and admit maybe he was right… ONCE.
omgs yes!! Tolkien was a genius and they are so well written if one has the patience to stroll through his world <3
I enjoyed The Hobbit but struggled through the remaining books. I read them all only because I received as a Christmas gift from my children and I knew they were going to ask if I read them. ?
@Michael I was the same way I had to listen to them. It made it so much easier to finish them.
Oh yes! for sure, but you should read the Hobbit first, otherwise it’ll all be for nothing.
i want to and will someday.
Yes…. However I’m not blind to the fact Tolkien was extremely wordy and sometimes fosuced on things that don’t really matter. I had to listen to these book cuz I often feel asleep reading them. Good book, great story!
Absolutely
Loved them ??
Definitely starting with the Hobbit, both my boys and I have read them all.
I love fantasy and couldn’t finish these books. Were too slow and to much detail for me to enjoy.
Yes but skip the chapters with Tom Bombadill – they add nothing to the story and are the most hideous writer’s self-indulgence 🙂
That part never made any sense?
I love them and read them over and over again!
Yes!!!!!!!
I loved every word. Delighted, really. I’ll delve back in some day. It’s been probably 15 years, but the trilogy is unforgettable. A+++
For me it’s a no. I’m currently re-reading them as my husband said maybe I was just too young when I first read them. However, I’m really not enjoying them this time round either xx
Definitely
Yes but hard work!
Re reading them again. Nice to be sucked back into middle earth
