@Annette definitely this!

The Hobbit was great; the others drag. Lots of breaking out in song, which is weird for a book.

Too many descriptions of imaginary things for my taste. Not enough character development and actual story. I found them boring. I had no problem with Les Miserables and War and Peace, so my threshold for slow is usually quite high.

They are the best. Tolkien is from another dimension and his writing is magic.

I think they’re great stories, but I don’t personally enjoy the writing style. My middle son and husband love the whole series.

My boyfriend is a massive LOTR fan, and while I had watched the movies and enjoyed them I hadn’t read the books. I wanted to read them to show interest in something that’s important to him. I couldn’t get through them, they are just so slow and extensive. Then I got them as audiobooks and it was amazing! So, if you are gonna try to get into them I recommend audiobooks.

It completely depends on your reading preferences. I thought they were fantastic books and really well-written. But I also love fantasy-adventure novels. If you’re into those types of books, I’d say you should definitely add it to your reading list.

I’m a massive fan of the movies and decided I needed to read the books. I did and was completely underwhelmed. I also read the Hobbit and loved it. But that was because at that point I hadn’t seen the movie. So, I guess if you haven’t seen the movies, then yes, read the books. Otherwise I wouldn’t bother

Hard to say what you’ll think as an adult as I read it mid teens. I loved it so much, I didn’t read another book for two years. At that age, it was just the story and the characters. Had I been older and know what I know now, maybe I’d have been more critical, but to me it was perfect. Obviously you need to enjoy fantasy.
