Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. Epic and long, but wow, the narrator is fantastic (have only listeners to about 30-40% of the book thusfar though).

The James Herriot books are well-narrated and a joy to listen to in the car.

My husband & I drove 15 hours over Christmas & listened to Trident: The Forging & Reforging of a Navy Seal by John Bruning & Jason Redman. We both really enjoyed it!

Our last car trip we “read” Devil in the White City and Unbroken. We’ve also enjoyed Doris Kearns Goodwin reading some of her books (Team of Rivals).

I think the Malcolm Gladwell books are great to listen to in that environment; and provide great topics to talk about after!

Far From The Tree (Andrew Solomon): Andrew Solomon tells the stories of parents who not only learn to deal with their exceptional children but also find profound meaning in doing so. Solomon’s startling proposition is that diversity is what unites us all. He writes about families coping with deafness, dwarfism, Down syndrome, autism, ..

We always listen to books on long trips and it’s a great thing to do! I would suggest in addition to long books, you get some shorter ones and some short stories, to fill in the gaps between longer books. Squirrel seeks chipmunk, by David Sedaris, is a series of short and very funny essays, if you don’t mind a little foul language mixed in!

We just finished Ready Player One on our last road trip. We kept finding excuses to keep driving, so that we wouldn’t have to turn it off.

We just did Physics for People in a Hurry by Neil Degrasse Tyson, and it was so much fun! I love nonfiction science or adventure on long trips. We also enjoyed Cosmos by Carl Sagan…it was narrated by Carl, LeVar Burton and Neil Degrasse Tyson. (Can you tell I have a big crush on NDT?) ??

Actually, if you search for him on Audible, he’s done several narrations – Sherlock Holmes (new stories), Ngaio Marsh, William Golding, plus cast recordings of books by Jane Austen, Neil Gaiman, and so on. You should check it out. I’ve just added several books to my wishlist.

Your library may have hoopla and/or OverDrive (the app is called Libby). They are both downloadable audio apps and they’re free and easy to use! Just a library card is all you’d need ?

We listened to the Boys in the Boat last road trip. It was really long so took the whole trip but loved it and he loved it wasn’t a story he’d be sad about missing some details if he dozed or something.
