Not seen or read the book. Is it good?

0
Nicola

Yeah I’d highly recommend x

1
Carmell

Yes it’s amazing!! Best book I’ve read. I would read first then watch the film! I watched the trailer and then read the book so I pictured the actors who played them when reading the book, so when I watched the film afterwards I felt like it was really them!! If that makes sense? Don’t usually like films after I’ve read the book but I did that x

2
Nicola

I read the book well before the film and I thought they’d done a really good job x

0
TalaQuestion author

The reason I’ve steered away from it is that in all my years I’ve been with my ex husband I couldn’t ever get him to read one book. He meets another woman and bam, he’s reading her copy of the book. Kind of put me off to be honest.

2
Nicola

I’d be the same

I’ve just watched Their Finest and I have to admit I’ve never cried at a movie like I did! I have a feeling it will be a long night for me as I just found it on overdrive so will be reading!

I have to admit I did find the movie a bit dry and didn’t continue watching it. Michael Fassbender is a brilliant actor but he scares me sometimes. ?

@Tala I’m not an emotional person with films, but I sobbed at the miscarriage scenes, the film was so good

Honestly i know it’s not that popular but I got my first real cry from a book at ‘Me, Before You’.
I got so invested and I read it about 6 months ago and yet I still know the layout of the annexe in my head. Only book I’ve ever wanted to read again straight after.

2

TalaQuestion author

@Charlie it seems to be very popular!

1
Wendy

@Charlie it’s a very popular book!

1
Charlie

Oh haha maybe just me I always seem to see people say it’s a borefest. I thought I was easily pleased ? xx

1
Carmell

I think it’s my favourite book actually. I’ve never cried at a book like I did that x

1
Charlie

Same here @Carmell I can’t seem to get into the next one though. Too much going on over Xmas I think xxx

0
Carmell

@Charlie to be honest I didn’t enjoy the second one. My friend lent me the third one months ago but still not read it. She said it was better than the second so I will read at some point. For me though the first one was such a moving story, I don’t think it needed a second or third one. Have you watched the film? X

1
Charlie

Yeah I watched the film and I enjoyed it but there were so many details that were left out that were so necessary to me and i don’t know about you but I had such a strong vision of all the characters and their families and the annexe and Nathan and all their voices I was like no that’s not right ? and I have never really felt that way before about book to movie. Xxx

0
Carmell

See I watched the trailer for the film then read the book…. So I saw the actors from the film when I read the book. So when I watched the film it really felt like it was them. I remember after I read the book I watched the trailer again straight after and was sobbing ?
I agree that they missed some important info out. Like how much pain he was in and how it was going to get worse, and he had pneumonia regularly etc. I think all of that is really important to understand why he made the decision he made x

1
Charlie

@Carmell that’s a really interesting way to take on a book to movie story. I might have to try that out next time I read one! Xxx

0
Carmell

@Charlie I didn’t do it on purpose, I saw the trailer then remembered my friend telling me about the book. So I went and brought the book straight away. It was definitely a good way though x

Wonder was our family read a few months ago. I cried so much at the end that my kids asked me if I wanted to pass over and they’d read it ?

2
Kate

@Emily it’s such a moving book, I’m not surprised at all. What a nice idea to read it together ❤️

2
Emily

My kids may not be babies anymore, but I still treasure our bedtime stories! ? (Also, means you can have natrual chats about any issues / queries etc) Wonder, The Christmasouras and The Lion The Witch and the wardrobe have been our faves this year.

2
Kate

@Emily we always do bedtime stories here too, it’s a great time for those chats isn’t it?! We haven’t upgraded to ‘proper’ books yet though as Violet is not able to follow just yet. When Violet was younger we did read Alice in wonderland together. I need to find some in-betweens slightly longer for the older girls but short enough to read over a few evenings do violet doesn’t loose interest. Scarlett’s reading the secret seven currently to herself after I do the bedtime story ?

1
Emily

We loved:Penny Dreadful,
The pirates next door (chapter books),
Oliver Moon,
Seriously Silly stories and of course Roald Dahl (George, Mr Fox and Pelly).
Helped bridge the gap of one being a super reader and one where it just hadn’t ‘clicked’.

Kate

@Emily thank you! Great recommendations ?

I’ve seen it ages ago. I don’t remember what effect it had on me. ?

0
Sue

@Tala oh no that one absolutely crucified me. Anything where the loss is pointless.

0
TalaQuestion author

That’s 99.9% of loss, eh? ?

0
Sue

@Tala not really, for me in a book or movie if someone is trying to save someone, or or its an accident or natural causes it is sad but doesn’t get to me the same way that war or violence for instance. It’s the same with loss due to the ignorance of society such as Brokeback Mountain, it doesn’t have to be that way so it is more heartbreaking for me.
