Ron Hansen is a great author in this genre. Desperadoes and A Wild Surge of Guilty Passion are my favorites of his. Erik Larsen is another author. Devil in the White City is fantastic.

I second the orphan train, awesome book. Don’t know The Kite Runner yet but read another book by the other (A Thousand Splendid Suns) which was great ??

I tried A Thousand Splendid Suns and couldn’t. I think it’s because I LOVED The Kite Runner so much, that I held it on a pedestal? I’m not really sure lol

Ken Follets series about WW1 is great as is his Middle Ages trilogy that starts with Pillars of the Earth.
I loved Paradise Alley by Kevin Baker, about NYC during the Civil War.
The Son by Philip Meyer was unbelievably good, but very bloody.
