Read it in high school–thought it was boring and had to analyze it to death for AP English. Really soured me on the book. Then read it again as an adult and got so much more out of it, loved it that time.

I liked “East of Eden.” The woman in the story is one of the great villains in literature. It’s Steinbeck’s version of the Biblical story of Cain and Abel. He kept a journal while he was writing the novel called “Journal of a Novel” and it gives some good insights on what he was thinking as the novel progressed.

An excellent, soulful, raw read! Personally, I am not usually into this kind of moralist(?) novels but it is simply impossible to put East of Eden down – both in terms of plot and, especially, in terms of writing style. As Steinbeck puts it beautifully: “I think everything else I have written has been, in a sense, practice for this.”

Its a good read but I think Steinbeck had a problem with women-a man of his time I guess.

Great book. I read “The Pearl,” by him in HS and it was also a great read. Not a novel like “East of Eden,” but really tears you.

I really liked “The Moon is Down” which Steinbeck wrote for the government as anti-Nazi propaganda during WWII. It is stark and reads like a classical Greek play.

Yes, one of my all time favorites. A classic. A must read if you want to know the mind of John Steinbeck. I think I was 14 when I first read it (and I’ve re-read it a few times since) and it made a lasting impression. Such an intricate tale of good and evil.

It’s a book you won’t ever forget. Steinbeck was angry at his wife when he wrote it, and that def comes through. ?
