My son is almost 9. The How to Train Your Dragon series by Cressida Cowell, Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series by Jeff Kinney, and The Encyclopedia Brown series are all favorites of his. Also, I found “Junior Classics” at Michael’s. They’re more kid-friendly versions of classic books. My son loved Treasure Island and Call of the Wild.

My daughter (6) loves The Owl Diaries series by Rebecca Elliott, and the Peg Plus Cat books are really great.

Percy Jackson series is good. As well as any Cornelia Funke book or anything by Diana Wynne Jones. Only problem with Jones is only howl’s Moving Castle is still being published. All her other books you have to get second hand or from the library or the ebook.

Wings of Fire is a great series for this age group; I think there are 10 or 11 books in the series now. The False Prince trilogy by Jennifer Nielsen is wonderful.

There is such a wealth of great new lit for tweens. Impossible to make recommendations w/out knowing interests and preferences. But anything by the amazing multiple award winning Kwame Alexander is sure to be a hit especially with boy reluctant readers. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18263725-the-crossover?ac=1&from_search=true

Jordan Sonnenblick is another sure hit author. Drums Girls and Dangerous Pie, and its sequel After Ever After, are superb coming of age stories for boys. Girls love both books as well. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/318404.Drums_Girls_Dangerous_Pie

By far the most popular series with my 7th & 8th graders is the Last Survivors series by Susan Beth Pfeffer. First 2 books are parallel stories so they don’t have to be read in order. Nail biting suspense. Girls always pick Life As We New It as their favorite. Boys choose The Dead And the Gone. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2169506.The_Dead_and_the_Gone
