Guessing you’ll already have Grimm’s, Anderson’s, Pullman’s? There’s a French writer and can’t remember his name at the moment but wrote Cinderella. Have you seen these? There’s a big collection of them that have the original and then all the other similar versions from other cultures?
@Yves oh then definitely get Grimm’s, Neil Gaiman Stardust is brilliant as well, Pullman has rewritten a Grimm version which is good. Gaiman has a few that I’d count as fairytale genre. 1001 Arabian Nights as well – so many beautiful stories. I’m a bit of a fairytale collector – it’s my favourite genre. It’s 2.30am here and just finishing a book but tomorrow when I’m more conscious I can put a list together for you if you’d like ?
@Yves Charles Perrault was the original author of Cinderella and he has a whole collection of other stories he wrote in the 1600s so it’d be worth looking at his work – there’s lots of translations available.
I love fairy-tale retellings. Beauty by Robin McKinley (B&tB) Deerskin by Robin McKinley (Donkeyskin) East by Edith Pattou (B&tB/East of the Sun, West of the Moon) Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik (Rumplestiltskin) Bitter Greens by Kate Forsyth (Rapunzel) Beauty by Sheri Tepper (Sleeping Beauty)
Similar to fairy tales but not re-tellings: Uprooted by Naomi Novik, The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden, Winter Rose by Patricia McKillip, Chalice by Robin McKinley.
I found out recently that The Nutcracker ballet was inspired by a story originally by E.T.A. Hoffmann and retold later by Alexandre Dumas (3 Musketeers, Count of Monte Cristo).
I’ve seen a few scenes from one of the filmed plays. The whole premise with the Nutcracker coming to life and taking the girl to the magical world. I haven’t read the book yet, but based on the forward, that is the original story but with more detail and goings on.
Fairy tale retellings are all over the place. Grimm’s classics are awesome of course. Ella Enchanted is clever and 100 times better than the movie. And not to self-promote (because I seriously only get 25 cents per sale) but there’s this one too…
Peas and Princesses by Aleese Hughes. It’s quick and fun, but definitely a little dark. I like that type of thing, though. I think her second book is supposed to come out soon, too. I read it through Kindle Unlimited. I think she also sells other editions on Amazon.
Fairy Tales Retold by Francesa Lia Block, I love them.
Lunar Chronicles
I enjoyed The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert.

I want to have that since Cinderella is my favorite fairy tale since childhood

Similar to fairy tales but not re-tellings: Uprooted by Naomi Novik, The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden, Winter Rose by Patricia McKillip, Chalice by Robin McKinley.

I still have no idea what it is about, I’ve seen the play with a jazz band, our friend wrote all the songs and was the voice over for it.

Sisters Grimm Sriesby Michael Buckley
Young reads: ‘Fablehaven’ ‘Sisters Grimm,’ or ‘Lunar Chronicles.’ Mercedes Lackey and Gregory McGuire write a lot of retellings.
Savage beauty by Casey L Bond
Kissing the Witch by Emma Donoghue is very good.
Philipp Pullman’s reinterpretation of Grimm’s Fairy Tales.
The Lunar Chronicles
Unhinged series
