I really enjoy Mercedes Lackey’s books, especially her Black Gryphon series and the 500 Kingdoms series. If you’re looking for more of a commitment, I almost always suggest Wheel of Time because I loved that series…
Also, though it is technically termed a YA series I don’t consider it so, A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. Another wonderful adult series is the Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. If you’re okay with non high fantasy as well Vita Nostra (translated from Russian) by Sergey and Marina Dyachenko was really interesting.
Court of Thorns and Roses should 100% be considered adult for many reasons – there are some fascinating articles out there about the sexism in the publishing industry that gets female authors’ books classified as YA when similarly themed books by male authors aren’t – just do a search and you’ll fall down the rabbit hole. ?
@Sydney I would recommend checking out James Wolanyk’s Scribe Cycle trilogy! Book three just came out AND book 1 is only $.99 right now ( https://bit.ly/2GgEmCM ) 🙂 -LJ
@Rachel oh I know, it is absolute torture!!! Did you see his interview where he said he wasn’t sure when it would be done and that he did the worst thing imaginable by creating a 2,000 page prologue! ?-AK
If you want some older favorites The Belgariad by David Eddings, or the beautiful Sevenwaters Series by Juliet Marilier, Stormwarden (Cycle of Fire series) by Janny Wurts, Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey
Karen Marie Moning writes a really good series also Ilona Andrews and Thea Harrison. I read everything so I’ve never known there was a difference in fantasy if I liked it I read it.
@Shelley really enjoy Ilona Andrews also. What is the name of the Moning series please? I have never read any of her stuff is it similar to Ilona Andrews? Same questions for the Harrison series if you don’t mind, thanks. I love finding new books this way.
Dark fever is the first in moning they’re about a girl whose sister disappears while in Ireland there are elves, beasts, and other creatures as the series continues. Harrison’s first book is Dragon Bound it’s about a dragon and different races called the elder races a girl steals from the dragon and he tracks her down because of course you don’t steal from a dragon.
@Donnalee To my knowledge, none of the ones, Shelley listed are available on KU.
Moning also had another series that’s more romance. It takes place in the and world as her Fever series. Personally, I found now enjoyment in reading the romance series first, but I know others that have never read it but love Fever.
Harrison’s Elder Races series has several books about Dragos and Pia, but also has plenty of books that are about other people in the world. She has other series that are great as well.
In my opinion, neither is quite like Ilona Andrews. Elder Races especially is generally considered more romance than the Urban Fantasy of the Kate Daniels series. The fever series is more Urban Fantasy, but just be prepared that or can get pretty dark, and there is definitely more sex than in Kate Daniels.
I adore both authors though, and all their series.
@Kimberly thank you so much for info. I definitely prefer more urban fantasy then straight romance, this info helps with deciding what to be put on the TBR list. Not being on KU does not bother me if I love the author (I.e., Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs, etc.) I will buy the book. I have found that KU is a great way to find new authors though. Thanks again. Have a great night off to finish Elemental Witch.
Kalayna Price is also more urban fantasy her first book is called Grave Witch also Lisa Shearin is very good she has 2 series. There’s the Supernatural Protection Agency series and the Raine Benares series she would be closer to Ilona Andrews and Patricia Briggs.
@Shelley I have the supernatural protection agency on my TBR list. I think I will start that next I have heard great things about it. Grave witch is also on there now… I’m excited for a new series.
Patricia Briggs’ Mercedes Thompson series, Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter and Psy-Changling series, Robin D. Owens’ Celta series, Sarah J. Maas’ Throne of Glass and A Court of Thorns and Roses
@Patricia whenever I’m in a funk she is my go to for rereading… she is amazingly funny… did you read the latest yet? She is one of the only that I always preorder without any info needed.

?-AK
@Kensington I know!!! As a writer (though not published yet) I understand his points sometimes, but as the reader I’m just like “Nooooo!”
And the first book of James Wolanyk’s Scribe Cycle is such a fast paced read! I really liked that book, so I would also recommend that book! -AK
The Kingmaker Chronicles by Amanda Bouchet
Gabriel Guy Kay- The Fionovar Tapestry is amazing
The Kushiel Legacy by Jacqueline Carey. The first book is called Kushiel’s Dart.
Laurell K hamilton is a good author, i also love the black dagger brotherhood books by J R Ward
If you want some older favorites The Belgariad by David Eddings, or the beautiful Sevenwaters Series by Juliet Marilier, Stormwarden (Cycle of Fire series) by Janny Wurts, Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey
Dragonriders of Pern was probably my first adult fantasy/science fiction novel…I still go back and re-read it every year or so…
@Rachel I re-read it frequently too!
@Susie it was my first too!! Then went on the David Eddings and Raymond Fiest

*whispers* these are really, really good!
More in YA, but The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill is a little dark and really good
Also Christine Feehan her dark series is really good.
Patricia Briggs’ Mercedes Thompson series, Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter and Psy-Changling series, Robin D. Owens’ Celta series, Sarah J. Maas’ Throne of Glass and A Court of Thorns and Roses
Illona Andrews’ Kate Daniels series
@Mara fabulous series!!

@Donnalee I love her work. Have read and re-read a bunch
@Patricia whenever I’m in a funk she is my go to for rereading… she is amazingly funny… did you read the latest yet? She is one of the only that I always preorder without any info needed.
