Depends on what type of books you like- The Butterfly Garden by Dot Hutchison is really good along with the follow up book The Roses of May. Anything by Lisa Unger as well.
@Alison I haven’t read the other two, but the reviews about The Heart’s Invisible Furies I would not consider “hype”, any more than a recognition that any beautiful thing is in fact a wonder. This book is soaring, deep, tragic, gorgeous.
‘Woman In The Woods’ is out in the UK and Ireland this week I think. Will be here in a month or so. Reviews say it’s great: one of the best in the series
@Judith it’s a funny thing about John Connolly. I sort of started in the ‘middle’ of the Charlie Parkers series with him: I think it was ‘The Burning Soul’ and ‘The Killing Kind’ (Mr. Pudd :)) and ‘Bad Men’ (which is sort of a stand alone) and I got hooked. I live in Maine and he writes like a wild Irish poet sometimes. It was only later that I found a copy of his first book ‘Every Dead Thing’ at the “free store” at our Town Dump (sort of a Maine thing :)). But I ‘ve always wondered what would have happened if I read Every Dead Thing first; cause it’s the only book of his that I’ve found to be derivative (as most first novels are). It reminded me of William Hjorstberg’s ‘Falling Angel’ (from whence came the movie Angel Heart) and a little bit of Red Dragon too. Weird. But in my mind he’s the best thriller writer on the planet today :). I always try to buy extra copies when they come out in paperback and just hand em to people :)..especially now that I’ve read them all!
@Mark . I started with the Black Angel and got hooked on Charlie Parker.since then i have waited for every new book he wrote. Like his stand alone ones too. Now i’m curious to read Falling Angel. The only other person i know that reads his books is my sister. I also love Michael Marshall Smith. The Straw men and The Upright Man. Both my Favourite thriller writers.
@Judith I have not read Michael Marshall Smith. I WILL CHECK HIM OUT THOUGH. THANKS. :)….a lot of very good crime and thriller writers living and weiting in Maine these days (even John Connolly has a condo here when he’s not home in Ireland). Maine (besides being the most ‘haunted’ place on earth :)) is a kind of geographical dream for a lot of writers…kind of tough to explain
He aleays signs off with Bangor Maine. I just found Michael Marshall on Amazon. He just tacked on the Smith. Downloaded 3 of his books. Now i’m going to binge on him.
I just reread The Mirror. I first read it about 30 years ago. I couldn’t remember the title but it was mentioned here that there were lists for “lost” books. I put in time travel and mirror and found it in no time. It was just as much fun as I had remembered.
