Pretty good! They’re a good extension of the world Lowry builds on The Giver. I have my 7th graders read Gathering Blue in their literary circle.

You’ll think I’m crazy but i have refused to read the rest. I loved the giver and part of the reason I loved it was the open ending. Many people have recommended I read the rest but I know the ending I wrote in my head and don’t want it changed.

Same (or, I guess I should say, “similar/flip side of the coin”?). I read the rest of the series and — though there were parts I appreciated — regretted it a little. I love The Giver, have reread it a few times, & don’t think it “needed” the continuation.

Have you watched the movie? I’m afraid to ?

You can read Gathering Blue and there is no affect to your own interpretation of The Giver. Truly these two are complete stand alone novels. And I think you’d miss a really good story if you skip GB. Absolutely skip the 4th if you want to stay true to your initial and personal feelings about The Giver and I promise Gathering Blue is in no way related.

This is true, @Jennifer

I had my own interpretation of the Giver as it ended, neither of the meanings Lowry gave or the other people in my book group. It caused a bit of a ruffle (as much as a group of very polite ladies can lol) but I really liked my non conformist idea so I feel your trepidation.

@Diana movie isn’t terrible, but I love Jeff Bridges. ? When I teach the novel and show the movie, the kids like the book best.

You have the right idea. I read them and I wish I could unread them!

They all stand alone which is excellent. Gathering Blue is fantastic. If you want all the answers read the 4th book. If you like your own interpretation of how The Giver ended don’t read the 4th.

“Son,” the 4th and final book, is amazing! ❤

My fav of the four is “Gathering Blue.” To be honest, I could have done without the last one, it just seemed forced. I like how the first three are loosely connected, they don’t have to be read in any order yet they are all part of the sane world. I give 4 stars to Bks 1-3 & 3 stars to Bk 4.

Enjoyed The Giver & Gathering Blue. I just bought Messenger & Son, so I’m hoping to enjoy those also.

I did not know there was a series.

They can be read individually really, but it’s considered The Giver Quartet, the 4 books I mentioned above. Now you can add more to your list to read!

Not quite as gripping as the first, but entertaining and still worth reading!

Ok. But the last book is the 2nd best to The Giver, it’s called Son. It’s the exact same story, but from a birth mother’s POV.

I loved the next 2. The 4th wasn’t really my thing. But it’s a great series!

I loved them all. When I finished the last one, I emailed Lois Lowry, and she emailed me back!

I’m going to come out with what is apparently a dissenting opinion: I was deeply disappointed with the rest of the series. I don’t think the others even sort of lived up to The Giver, and they took away some of it’s magic. I honestly wish I could unread them and go back to living with the mystery.

I was in love with The Giver. I read Gathering Blue and felt it was nowhere in the vicinity of how great The Giver was… very disappointed. I never read the others.

Agree. I saw what the author was trying to do, but it didn’t really succeed. The Giver is strong enough to stand alone.

I thought the first one was exceptional, one of my all time favorite books. The others didn’t catch my fancy as much. I probably liked Messenger the best of the others.

They get better as you proceed. Just don’t expect them to follow the way series traditionally do. The characters all affect the last story but they don’t follow sequentially.

Neither did I. Liked, (didn’t love) it. Not terribly interested in any subsequent books in this series.
