Well worth the extra $40 for the built in light.

Pay the extra $40! SO worth it! (I have the kindle voyage)

Do you think the voyage is better then the paperwhite?

1
Emma

@Melanie I do! I really suggest it! ? it’s worth the extra money, especially if you get the one with 3G! BOOKS ANYWHERE YOU WANT (with no monthly fees!)

3
Emma

@Melanie (Sorry, I geek out over kindles ?)

It’s worth the extra for the paperwhite. It’s backlit so you can read it in the dark 🙂

2
Reply
Emma

Actually, (and sorry if this comment makes me sound like a snobby know it all. TOTALLY not my intention. I just think it’s cool!) it’s not backlit. It’s front lit ? the lights shine down on the screen rather than having lights in the screen. Backlit is like your phone, it can strain your eyes after a while! The kindles that are frontlit (like the paperwhite and voyage) won’t strain your eyes! ?

3
Larry

Emma we love you any way.by the way it is actually side lit.??

(The Voyage is even better!)

1
SarahQuestion author

What makes the Voyage better?

2
Ervin

I don’t they have that one

0
Emma

@Sarah it has a crisper screen, more lights on the screen for more even lighting, the bezel is smaller, the bezel is flush with the screen, it’s made out of nicer materials, it’s lighter, it has page turning buttons, (and honestly, I could go on forever ?) (I’m kind of kindle obsessed)

0
Emma

@Ervin OH NO!

0
Emma

@Sarah oh! I forgot to say the voyage has a light sensor. So it senses the light in the room you’re reading in and adjusts the light on the kindle to the perfect light automatically!

0
Ervin

Oh wow

0
SarahQuestion author

@Emma aw man you are going to make me spend more money aren’t you!

1
Emma

@Sarah hahaha definitely! ? I almost got the paperwhite myself, but a friend had the voyage and she got me HOOKED! So I got one ? My mom (Who was against all kinds of ereaders) Saw my voyage and bought one for herself she loved it so much! And now she reads exclusively on her kindle!
I also know how to get all the free books and deals if you’re interested ? I have been a kindle owner for 9 years now! So I know all the tricks ?

1
Ervin

Yes I see

0
Paulina

@Emma ok you seem to be well versed in this..can I use other apps like hoopla to read on the voyage? I don’t want to get stuck buying books from Amazon.

1
Emma

@Paulina I have never heard of hoopla before, so I can’t say. However, if it’s a pdf, you can read it on your kindle ?

The Paperwhite is worth it

If you read in a well lit area all the time, the Kindle would be okay, but if the amount of light varies go with the Paperwhite. (I have a voyage and love it).

Paperwhite! The built in light is worth every penny.

1
Reply
Larry

Ok Sarah, the main difference is the kindle paper white has a built in light. The paper white will not work with Audible. The base unit will work with audible but only works with bluetooth speaker, headphones etc. I have a Paperwhite and it works great for me.

1
Reply
Larry

Cool the base kindle will read books {if permitted) with a synthetic voice on bluetooth {besides Audible version of the book}

haha I do prefer paperback most of the time but I get sucked in by all of the good kindle deals on amazon… so cheap!!

0
Michael

Part of the fun is picking the book up and feeling it in your hand. Thunk of how many more paperbacks you can buy with that extra fourty dollars…

0
SarahQuestion author

so true, I defiantly don’t neglect my real books but the convenience of the kindle is nice as well

0
Courtney

I used to feel the same way but I use Overdrive through my library now and I love that I can check out so many books and not have to worry about returning or damages, etc. and it keeps me from spending unnecessary money on books!

2
SarahQuestion author

@Courtney My rule is I can read it on my Kindle ( I currently have a fire because they are so cheap but its not cutting it anymore) and if it becomes a favorite or I will read it again I have to buy it for my shelf.

I’ve got both, but on the kindle you can get distracted with other stuff, when on the paperwhite it’s mainly for reading(plus, in my opinion, it’s lighter).

Laura

I like the kindle paperwhite. You can use it outside as well

I have a standard kindle and a paperwhite and love the paperwhite so I’d recommend that!

However I am considering getting a voyage, but wonder if it’s worth upgrading from a paperwhite to a cottage at all?

Esther

Nope.. not much of a difference.. not worth the extra dollars..

1
Emma

YES! SO WORTH IT! I think there is a HUGE difference, but everyone has their own opinions.

Kindle. The Fire is awesome, but the battery life sucks on the 10. There are settings to change the background color and font to make it easier to read.

Yeah I have a fire now and the batter life is awful plus the glare is horrible even with a matte screen protector.

if you don’t need a tablet then definitely the paper white. its a whole lot easier on the eyes. especially at night.

2

Jennifer

I change my background color at night on my fire.

1
Emolyn

That’s not a bad idea. I use to have the nook tablet and no matter how low I put the light it still hurt. But then again I am sensitive to bright lights ?. But I also just needed my nook for reading. So I got the backlight nook instead. I had my phone for other apps and what not. That’s why I said if she really doesn’t need a tablet she’s better off with the paper white.

0
Jennifer

I use what they call blue shade. It’s suppose to help you fall asleep instead of keep you up and also better for ur eyes. My normal read i actually use black with white letters.

2
Christel

I love my fire; I have the $49.00 one and it’s great; I change to blue shade if I need to. Something to consider: Black Friday- Amazon usually has an awesome sale on their Kindles…..

2
Jennifer

One reason I like working at Amazon is I know what’s going on sale first.

2
Matthew

I second that, I’ve got a fire hd 8 and a paperwhite and I can’t read in the fire is just like reading off a screen, but isn’t the case with the paperwhite at all!

1
Jennifer

Hm. It doesn’t bother me unless the brightness isn’t at a good setting.

0
Laura

Definitely Paperwhite. I ordered the original Kindle and it has no backlight, you can’t even see the text. I returned it the next day.

0
Reply
Tabitha

Depends. Just reading chapter books(non-illistruated) id get paperwhite. If you want colored pictures id get a fire.

By the way around this time of year is when amazon releases their new kindles.

Yeah they’ve just released the all new fire hd 10 and the all new kindle oasis is up for pre order too!

2
Reply
Jennifer

Yes

1
Matthew

Part of me is so tempted to pre order it, but the only feature I’m seeing on it that isn’t on the paperwhite is that it’s water proof! Now I don’t have a bath at home only a shower, so I’m not sure I can justify spending that much money on the off chance I take up reading in the shower!? ?

0
Emma

I WANT THE WATERPROOF OASIS SO BAD ?

2
Jennifer

That is expensive for what you are getting. I can’t believe that. I always get the 32gbs unless it has an SD slot.

1
Emma

@Jennifer yea, it’s the only reason why I haven’t gotten it yet ?

0
Jennifer

I rather have a Nintendo switch . Almost the same price. I have a good kindle and a tablet. This year I’m not buying any.

1
Emma

@Jennifer haha see, I am a huge book addict and obsessed with kindles. I have been waiting for a waterproof one for YEARS ?

1
Jennifer

I have too but I rather it be the hd fire.

0
Emma

@Jennifer see, the kindle fire hurts my eyes. This is perfect for me ? (The not so perfect part, the price!)

What if I told you you can read hard copies and own a Kindle at the same time?

4
Rohen

? I wouldn’t dispute the fact. I own a pile of e-books (including some I bought on Kindle), but still ‘prefer’ hard copies.

0
Tika

If I love a book, I’ll have it both ways and switch between the kindle and the physical book…i like to finish on the physical copy 🙂

1
Jinay

If only I could afford that…

Charity shops/thrift stores 🙂

0
Jinay

I’ve yet to visit such a shop, there aren’t that many here in India. I once visited a shop where they sold used books by weight and it was damn cheap, probably $2 for a kg. It was fun, looting the store 😛

0
Tika

Ooh wow that would have been fun! My mother in law lives in Pushkar just when you say India 🙂 she gets books shipped from Amazon.

1

Amazon India has decent selection of books.

That is what we use the fire for a lot as well. We have two for the kids for when we are on road trips so they can watch shows. Much cheaper than an ipad but the games aren’t as good.

1

Probably the paperwhite which is what it says Paper-white… I had an old Kindle and the background was light gray with dark grey letters

I have the Paperwhite. Waited for one of the sales for about $20 off, but probably worth it at regular price. I prop it up on my bedside table (using a phone or tablet stand) and just tap the next page. When I fall asleep, so does the kindle and I love it. Best kindle I’ve ever owned.

Linda

I have one of each. I prefer my old kindle for various reasons.. but I do like the white background on the paperwhite

0

Ariannah

My regular kindle I’ve given to my husband and he loves it for reading in direct sunlight. Even the front light on the paperwhite cannot emulate that as beautifully as the real sun 🙂

1
Gina

Paperwhite! You can still read while the lights are off

Angelica

Paperwhite. The touchscreen requires less pressure the the original kindle. Also the layout of the books is better and is the font display when reading.

1

Jenny

All good points!

Paperwhite also has a kindle cover that closes magnetically protecting the kindle. When you close it, it automatically shuts off. It can also flip around as a stand. I didn’t have a proper cover for my last kindle and accidentally cracked the screen in the car door. Worth the investment
