Yes the book is way better, it doesn’t even compare to me, it’s not even as though it’s an adaptation of the book because it’s so different, it’s like it’s own thing. I hated how they changed the location, with it being in London in the book I was able to picture all the places and it added to the creepy atmosphere, they obviously changed the location to appeal to a wider audience but it totally ruined it for me and I’m surprised the author allowed them to change it so much.

Agree – should have definitely been a British film

1
Louise

Agreed! Even her drinking cans of G+T in the book to drinking something out of a water bottle in the film I didn’t like! Could imagine her on a commuter train out of Euston with her G+T tinnies so vividly!

1
Moushka

Of course to appeal to an American audience they had to film in America. I did read an interview with the author who gave some lame excuse why it was being filmed in USA and how it wouldn’t make any difference and I just thought ‘sell out’.

0
Jenny

@Moushka I completely agree. The author totally sold out and I actually lost a bit of respect for her. If it were me I would have stuck to my guns. With some stories you can get away with changing the setting but with this it was imperative to the story. I thought the setting being in London made it so much more creepy and atmospheric as I could imagine the dark, gloomy, grey and rainy skies.

1
Moushka

@Jenny If you know the parts of London the book was set in and the train lines (I do, obviously spent far too long on trains!) they’re very atmospheric and the whole can of g&t and staring into someone’s living room/garden from a train carriage I can see quite easily happening. It worked to a certain extent in the film but it looked almost ‘glossy’ for an American market. Also when you think the Bridget Jones films were successfully filmed in London then why not GOAT?

0
Louise

I also thought Emily Blunt was totally wrong to play the character but that’s a whole other flaw to the film in my opinion ? x

1
Moushka

@Louise oh gosh yes! Wrong choice!

I read the book when it first came out and really enjoyed it. I watched the film last night and quite enjoyed that too – I think it may have been because I read the book so long ago that I can’t remember all the details. So read the book first and watch the film in a couple of years 🙂
