Insensibly he formed the most delightful habit in the world, the habit of reading:he did not know that thus he was providing himself with a refuge from all the distress of life;he did not know either that he was creating for himself an unreal world which would make the real world of every day a source of bitter disappointment.

@Jeannie it’s right up my street! Up there with Wise Blood and And The Ass Saw The Angel. If you liked Wasp Factory then you’ll love these two, if you haven’t read them already

@Jeannie I’ve just bought another by him today, don’t have high hopes of it living up to Wasp Factory, but we shall see. Definitely check out Wise Blood too!

Of human bondage is a favourite of mine from years back.

I second that – I love this book, humans getting in the way of their own happiness finally managing to get it together.

The Wasp Factory is odd. I’d recommend it based on the fact that it’s quick. You won’t lose much time if you hate it

I’ve never got Ian Banks, he always seems to waste the various world’s he created in my opinion. Wasp Factory is the same and it never built on its themes to anything special, more just letting you along to watch.

I read parts of The Wasp Factory in public places, and felt like if anyone knew what I was reading, I might be arrested. It was a disquieting book.
