My daughter read that book right before she left for college and it scared the holy crap out of her with neighbors and strangers. I said Good because there are people out there that will take people away in a minute.
I read it only because my then 12 year old wanted to read it. She had her own library card and full reign except fir that one. It’s horrific and I wish I had never read it. Some things you do not need in your head. Especially as “entertainment”.
not one of my favorites – but that’s me. Maybe it was because of the circumstances around my reading it. A friend was talking to me about books, and she loaned me her copy insisting that I read it. Before I could get it back to her, she had passed away.
When this book was published, my daughter – an avid reader – was 13. I had read it and she picked it up to take on a long flight. I took a deep breath and told her it might be a hard story to,read, but that it was very well written and a good, but sad, story.
To this day, she would say this book is on her top 5 list.
I still haven’t read it…..it came out the month my cousin was murdered. Even though he circumstances were different, the emotions were too raw to read a story about a young girls murder. Maybe I can do it now. Everyone says it’s excellent.
I just finished it today, actually I read the whole thing today. Could not put it down. Also read Looking For Alaska in one day yesterday. Both very good.
Walked into a restaurant last night and the young hostess had it to read in between customers. A great book, but not one everyone would be comfortable reading.
Context matters. I am in the middle of a Supernatural binge so when I read this the first thing that came to my mind was you must have salted and then burned them. 😉 Yeah, I got issues.
That’s another one that impacted me. I could see and feel that book. It’s probably, though, the only book I have read that I liked the movie ending better. There was no question in the movie what happened in the end.
Hard subject matter, but a wonderful book. Movie was good, too!
Haven’t seen the movie-good to know. Subject matter was waaaay tough!
@Lisa it was!
I loved it!
Good book.
I have tear marks on some of the pages of that book
Lots and lots!
I could not read it until my kids were grown.
I really disliked this book. The ending was ridiculous. Sorry!
Agreed
Not one of my favorites
OMG. I just couldn’t. I got about four chapters in and said No. I had nightmares, and that’s not my idea of enjoyable.
I really disliked this one….
Have you read Lucky, by Alice Sebold?
No. Should I?
Yes, I read “Lucky” many years ago. Very sad
Loved it, too.

If the books alerts people then maybe that was the point!
Loved it!
I’ve always wanted to read that.

I couldn’t get past the first scene.
I read to understand the human condition in all its varieties.
One of my all time faves!!
I hated the ending
I loved it – read it twice
It was a rough read but worth it
I liked it.
One of my all
Time favs
I remember wanting and hoping and wishing for someone to please please open the refrigerator!!!!!
I thought Alice Sebold did a very good job of telling what happened to all the characters, except the police officer. I wanted to know more about him.
I really like that one too! Makes me want to read it again, but I got so gosh darn many on my list that I haven’t read yet! ??
Fantastic character development but the subject matter made me physically ill. The film adaptation was good.

Great book
Her books are haunting
And the movie is fantastic as well!
Yes. That book stayed with for a long, long time.
Excellent but so hard to read in parts.
Great book. Sad
I cried hysterically…. wish I had not read it!
I wish I hadnt read it either. I don’t see how so many people can say ” I really enjoyed this book Really???How can anyone “enjoy this” ??

Excellent book!
Yeah. That was a good one!
Very tender ending. I loved this book. It’s in my permanent collection.
Me neither

Maybe you shouldn’t. My sister was murdered, and this book dredged up so many memories and emotions.
I had to buy this when I saw it for sale. It’s one I really enjoyed. Did not like the movie though. Leaves a lot to be desired
That was a good one!!
There’s been discussion on this book before. Seems you either love it or hate. I am in the latter category. I hated it. wish I never read it.
Me too. Hated it.
So much better than the movie
I enjoyed it too.
I couldn’t put it down…had to finish it before bedtime…
I just finished it today, actually I read the whole thing today. Could not put it down. Also read Looking For Alaska in one day yesterday. Both very good.
Disturbing
Walked into a restaurant last night and the young hostess had it to read in between customers. A great book, but not one everyone would be comfortable reading.
Very true. I chucked I across the room?
I cried so much reading that book. So glad you enjoyed it! <3
Loved this book in a “it scared me and broke my heart” way
Context matters. I am in the middle of a Supernatural binge so when I read this the first thing that came to my mind was you must have salted and then burned them. 😉 Yeah, I got issues.
Found this book incredibly disturbing.
I could barely get through the movie… I’m not sure I could read the book. ?
The book is better than the movie!
I read the book and had to finish it, but it disturbed me for quite awhile.
I read it high school and it still bothers me sometimes! Great book though, book is way better than the movie.
I hated both versions
Great book!

Awesome story
??
It’s a great book.
A little too creepy for me but good writing
Her memoir is really good too. Its a tough read but well worth it.
Hated the ending
That is one book I wish I had never read….
I thought it was beautifully written.
Agree
My niece recommended that book to me and I read it in braille! It was great.
Yes!
A memorable book.
Heartbreaking
My life journey as a Widow began 2+ years ago, I loved the book and insight into how grief touches all of our lives.
It’s in my TBR pile from a recent run to a library sale.
So glad I read the book before the movie. Book was great!
That books still haunts me
Great story
Good book.
Set in my “hood”- I love this one too, especially when her grandfather visits and they share a dance-OMG the tears ?
Great book!!!
One of the best!
