The sheer honesty and loneliness of the characters, coupled with turning their backs on what others thought. Being almost that age, I could see the truth in the situation, especially adding the need to care for a grandchild.

What age? I’ll have to go to Amazon. ?

The main characters are around 70. I’m 64 and one of the best things about aging is to let go of the need to meet other’s expectations. ?

Their relationship was so pure…almost childlike in some aspects.

I love his books; he was a fantastic writer. If you haven’t read Plainsong, please do. It is my favorite.
Souls At Night is supposedly being made into a movie with Robert Redford and Jane Fonda.

That would be awesome! Why not Ali McGraw?

I loved this. My friend thought it thoroughly depressing. I wondered if we were reading the same book!

I listened to this on audio and thought the same thing, what a lovely, lovely story. It made me think of my mother, a recent widow and my hope that she won’t spend the remainder of her days alone.

One of my lifetime favorites! I find the older that I get, the more I really appreciate older characters who are more than just old! Kent Haruf was awarded a lifetime achievement award in 2016 from the Colorado Humanities.
