I liked it. I could have done without the added menstruation and sex content though.

I know I’m in the minority but I absolutely detest it. I watched the first season and it so distorted the wonderful Lucy Maud Montgomery book and Anne’s character in particular I have refused to watch anymore.

On the plus side, and this is only based on the first season… I thought it was wonderfully cast. Everyone I think other than Diana I thought was spot on. Also absolutely loved the opening credits.

I felt Ruby had been miscast. I saw her as taller, willowy, shallower and flirty. The little gal they have playing the role strikes me more as Jane Andrews.

Thank you all for your replies so far. I have to admit I have not read this book but have watched the first five episodes of season one and it has me very intrigued.

I have read Anne of Green Gables , which the series is based off of, and I have watched at least one season. Many parts are different from what I remember reading. But overall it portrays the plot well, as much as I have seen. The book is better, unsurprisingly. I love Anne of Green Gables!

I haven’t watched it yet, but I read a fascinating article comparing this show against the old shows and the books. The writer concluded this new series kept closer to the spirit of the books so I’m definitely in.

I disagree. They added darkness to this new series which was never in the books to begin with. The 1980s series is very true to the spirit of LM Montgomery’s writing.

Laura Arlt Gerold I haven’t seen the new series, but I disagree that the 1980’s series was in the same spirit as the books.
The 1980’s show very much emphasized the lighter side of the books and at no time watching them did I come to understand the prejudices that a red-headed orphan girl would face. The books made this side of the situation more clear. Problems with the farm and even Matthew Cuttbert’s death didn’t carry such emotional weight in the 1980’s films. The only film I felt had the right emotional balance, wasn’t actually based on any of the books.

I completely disagree. I just reread the book series this past year. While no one production can ever capture everything that is in a book, the 1980s version did a great job. Matthew’s death was a big part of it and dealt a heavy emotional impact in the film. The book is rather light hearted and does not spend a lot of time dealing with “prejudices” that Anne faced. I’m sure she did face them, but that was by no means the focus of the book series.

The book I felt had the heavy emotional impact was Anne’s House of Dreams, but that is not a part of either TV series.

@Laura true, the heaviness even came from other characters in House of Dreams, not Anne or Gilbert, the later books deal with war etc much like the sequel to the 1980s series (but different).

it is such a good show! I loved the Anne of Green Gables series growing up, and so while the books are definitely better, CBC did such a good job on the casting and plot portrayal. And the fact that they chose The Tragically Hip for the opening credits makes it even better. Nothing but love for the show and can’t wait for season 3.

I recently watched the two seasons of the show and loved it. Anne initially drove me crazy, talking too much in an animated way and always putting her foot in it, but after a few episodes, she grew on me. I love Marilla and Matthew and the quiet way that they show their love and respect for each other and the quiet way that they live their lives. I did some ‘Googling’ about the area that the story takes place in, it is so beautiful. I have ordered the book from the library and can’t wait for Season 3. Of and I recently listed to an audiobook – ‘Christmas with Anne’, a series of short stories which were sugary sweet but perfect to warm your heart! Take in small doses…?

I prefer the old series bc it’s slower paced and less dramatized, a different style, the plot of the Netflix series doesn’t follow the books strictly at all. Gilbert never travelled or emigrated or lost his parents. What bothers me bc (I do research in media psychology) is that it clearly caters to an audience/generation expecting sex and crime early on in any kind of entertainment. I am a woman who watches horror movies and series like Vikings and Game of Thrones but I don’t need these elements in a children’s series. I think it spoils the genuine (not fake ) innocence of classic child literature in a way.
