I’ve been generally depressed lately. But I find that reading Lemony Snicket/Daniel Handler books lifts my mood. Yes, most are for kids, but they’re just so light, and funny, but always have that dark/serious edge that keeps the adult in me loving them.
The Bachelor’s Home Companion by P. J. O’Rourke, which is good for anyone leaving a relationship, and starting to live alone. Why? Because in the depth of despair, it’ll make you laugh. I actually met P. J. O’Rourke on a book tour about a year or so after reading it, and I thanked him for the book, saying it got me through some rough times after my divorce. He replied “I wrote it when I was going through a divorce, and it got me through some rough times too.” I thought that was so cool.
Knock yourself out with Nickolas Sparks. I know people often chose some “lift me up” stuff for heartbreaks, but I’m a believer in aching it through ? I mean, if you’re heartbroken you must’ve had smth special and it deserves mourning for a while and only happy memories after. But that’s me. ? If you prefer smth funny and distracting, I recommend to read Bridget Jone’s Diary by Hellen Fielding. Funny and very self-sufficient.

might seem strange, but it was The Stand by Stephen King that helped get me through my divorce.

Dreamland by Sarah Dessen. It’s pretty grim but makes me have a good cry and get all the shit out my system.
When I was divorcing, Jennifer Crusie was all I could read. I am normally a British mystery reader.
