I think what I loved is that character evolved. Nothing is in stone. You will understand the true purpose of the series in the third book.
You laugh, you cry, you die a little too…

It’s not for everyone but I love it. Here’s the first paragraph from the product description:

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.

@Jordan it’s about a female assassin who gets hired by a prince to win a completion and is so bad ass and with out spoiling it there is secrets you don’t even expect and plenty of different characters you can fall in love with I started with the assassins blade book which has a few short stories in it so you can get into the story by knowing some of the characters before you start throne of glass ?

1
Lauren

What @Emma said. By FAR one of my favourite series ever ❤️

It’s not, in my opinion. The book promises so much and delivers so little, not to mention the mc was annoying af, I didn’t like that book at all :/

Ewa

IKR? No idea why it got so popular

1
Valeria

@Ewa finally someone who gets me ? it was such a painfully boring book for such a cool premise and the main character was insufferable “I’m the deadliest assassin ever, I could kill you without blinking” whines about absolutely everything, wants everyone to kiss the ground she walks on and makes the dumbest choices smh ? I didn’t bother with the rest of the series

1
Ewa

“I’m the deadliest assassin ever, I could kill you without blinking” I would add “but I won’t because KILLING IS WRONG! unless I’m mad at you for reasons, then it’s okay”
She’s whiny and makes no sense as a character, always changing her personality (the whipping thing makes me annoyed af – when she came out of the mines she was all “they didn’t break me, no matter how many times they whipped me, I smiled” and then “oooh, nooo, that’s MY BIGGEST TRAUMA”) and narrations makes her ALWAYS look good, no matter how shitty she was.

1
Ewa

The only good thing was Manon, but then SJM had to ruin her with Dorian thing, because we can’t have badass lady who doesn’t crave dirty sex in which she’s all sub.

1
Valeria

@Ewa I’ve heard that manon is one of the only few good characters but I didn’t get that far ? I’m happy though because I did make it halfway through the last book in her thorns and roses series and I hated it so much, I don’t think sjm is for me but everyone else seems to love her

1
Kelly

I like the series, but I can’t stand Aelin. So I half get you. Lol.

0
Ewa

ACOTAR was okay for me, until third book which was just as bad as ToG, but yeah, SJM seems to be profoundly popular because… no idea why tbh xD There is so much wrong with her books, but at the same time similar books, like Bloodfever, also seem to be popular. No idea why.

0
Kelly

They are nowhere near my favourite series. I think she has far too many ‘perfect’ characters. Never heard of bloodfever, lol.

Yes. But read the novellas The Assassin’s Blade first to understand her background. Otherwise the MC will just come across as a whiny, spoilt cow and you’ll wonder why everyone is going insane over her.

I am re-reading it and I would have said yes to your question because I remember really loving it but since reading it again now it’s a huge YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSS girl!!! It is a must read. I think I flew through it the first time. I read it in about 3 days it was so good. This time it is just as good but it has taken me so much longer, on purpose!!! I want to savor the book this time. I remembered some of it where other parts I just didn’t remember. I am loving the characters all over again and Celaena is still a badass. I forgot how much I loved the character Nehemia in the book. She’s amazing. You will love reading it. It will be a fast paced book just try to slow it down and enjoy the journey Sarah J. Maas takes you on. Sorry to write a book here 😀

reminded me too much of the hunger games.

0
Reply
Hannah

In what way?

0
Mae

the battle to the death, the royal elite culture, the chosen one thrust into greatness etc. it is hard to explain but it reminds me alot of it.

0
Hannah

@Mae interesting. A battle to the death as a means of choosing a champion is a pretty common trope. If you continue on to the later Books I think you’d find they have even less in common with Hunger games.

0
Valeria

The premise maybe but the competition isn’t even to the death ? I think i was excited for it because it sounded like it was gonna me like thg but it ended up being lackluster for me, I adored the hunger games but throne of glass wasn’t even close to it

0
Hannah

@Valeria how far did you get in the series

0
Valeria

@Hannah I read the first book and I didn’t like it, i found the main character insufferable and idk how with a premise so cool the book ended up being boring, maybe it’s just not for me ?
