Some Charles Dickens books..Although A Christmas Carol is an an exception. The other books are written in the cockney old English-language..very hard to read and follow.
King. Isabel allende and I parted ways a long time ago. Dan Brown. Margaret Atwood. “The Blind Assassin” is probably the only book I have abandoned halfway.
Teen romance was all I read when I was like 12 to 16 and then I realized it was all a bunch of crap and life doesn’t work that way. So now I read dark, twisted, depressing books.
@Heleen Yes!!! Of course Victorian Lit in general is weird. When I had to teach Victorian poetry to seniors, I broke them up into groups and had them do a project on different poets instead.
Unpopular opinion: P&P is not my fave Austen; Emma is because I find her relationship with Mr. Knightley a lot more believable than Elizabeth and Darcy.
@Crys I had this bbc dramatization on audible and tbh I thought Emma was kind of a b*tch towards her ‘lower’ friend .. I heard Persuasion is also pretty good
Heleen Lovegood Cuypers they all were in Victorian culture, I think that’s why the lit from that time period is just not interesting to the modern teen when having to teach it
Charles Dickens. Thus far I have read only A Christmas Carol. Any attempt to read anything longer has kind of sputtered out. I lost count how many times I began A Tale of Two Cities and put it aside. But I will conquer this literary mountain someday.
@Marsha It will be a tough nut to crack but I am determined to do it. Same with Mark Twain, Victor Hugo, and some other classic authors. I am woefully underread of female authors. My reading habits are at the mercy of mood and interests.
My favorite is Wuthering Heights..Emily Bronte..I must admit..that’s not the easiest to read either..but the story pulled me in. I have War and Peace I am determined to read. Charlotte Bronte…Jane Eyre..great book. And of course..Sherlock Holnes..n Jane Austen.
@Marsha Another book I have made several attempts to read and failed. My bad habit (which I am currently correcting) is that I read too many books at once and lose the plotline of something that requires details to be retained.
@Marsha Wuthering Heights just fails to grab my attention. The Surrealists of the 20’s saw it as a great novel which depicted what they called amour fou or mad love. Most of the books I read do not rely or contrived or convoluted plots and I can jump in and out of them without losing my way. So I don’t read any mystery or spy novels that require this level of attention. Moby Dick is great example of great novel that one does not need to rely on the author’s manipulation to keep one fixed on the story.
That’s why there’s something out there for everyone..My tastes are eclectic..history..WWll .. Titanic…mystery..etc.Never read Moby Dick..maybe I’ll give it a go. Thanks!
Dean koontz – it took me a month to read the first one of his Frankenstein books. And I only finished it because my ocd demanded it ? Laurell k Hamilton used to be a favorite of mine but her recent work has gone down hill.
Me too. I’m a huge fan of Brandon Sanderson and I wanted to read the Wheel of Time just so I could get to the last few that Brandon wrote, but I read the first book in the series and was very underwhelmed and then I quit halfway through the second book.
@Christian, exactly. I’ve tried reading WoT before because it’s a fantasy icon, but just couldn’t get into it. Then, when I heard Sanderson finished the series, I tried again. I couldn’t even finish the first book. And I’m genuinely curious how often he says the word abrupt or abruptly in that one book. I bet it’s close to 200 times!
His world building was really fascinating. I respect him for that, and obviously other people like him, I just can’t read his stuff. ?
I tried to read WoT like three times before I got through it. Now I love it lol but yeah it’s not the normal style I read. Very slow going until you get to where he’s trying to go with it…
I went all the way to the Bloat…I mean Blight with him (& Bland…I mean Rand) and it never even had the chance to fizzle out – it wouldn’t spark to begin with! Sorry….
@Deanna Bahahaha I could see that. Yeah I gave the book to my dad and told him he had to get through the first 100 pages before he would like the book. That was a year ago and he’s still only on page 30 or something. Jordan isn’t for everyone.
Even great authors can’t please everyone. And ANYONE with that many fans, I consider great. Even if it doesn’t appeal to me. I’m sure there are exceptions, but for the most part, I whole heartedly believe that.
^ totally agree, Deanna, and on a REAL note: I don’t like Jordan, for whatever reasons. Yet many do… and who am I to say those people haven’t good taste n such?
I’m NO ONE to say such. I mustn’t say it…and I won’t.
If someone likes The Eye Of The World…then they should go and cop the next book NOW.
I love his Wheel of Time series!! Haha, but I can totally see why others wouldn’t be keen on his writing. He does get repetitive sometimes and the details can feel unnecessary to some (I personally love all the detail because it gives insight into the various cultures present in the series.) It’s a rich world he created and it can seem a bit much to some readers
I like his world, and the depth. I’m okay with that part, I just didn’t like the style and lack of urgency I felt while reading (which may be because I couldn’t connect with the style). I mean, I read in depth stuff. LOTR and The Stormlight Archives aren’t lite reading. It just wasn’t for me. But, fans like you are why I can acknowledge that he was a great writer, because many people love him.
I can’t ‘read Nicolas Sparks… Can’t do it… Not without Prozac… I hate stories where people die sadly… there is too much negative and sadness in the world already without me wasting my time reading about it.. Give me a happy Ending or a solid ending… without all the drama and tissues.. I choose Happy Ever After Every Time!!
Some Charles Dickens books..Although A Christmas Carol is an an exception. The other books are written in the cockney old English-language..very hard to read and follow.

@Jo Nope! We started watching him on Mental Floss before I read any of his books. I like him on there, but his books are boring.
I read Fault in Our Stars. And I was like. Okay, Hazel has cancer and is bitter. But like no one can be that bitter and cynical all the time.
@Aimee how are we even friends lol I love them! ?
I read one book by John Greene and I wasn’t impressed ? I wanted to love him because so many do

Pride & Prejudice is read by actress Rosalyn Pike.
I have it on audio too, but idk… the society is just so weird xD
@Heleen Yes!!! Of course Victorian Lit in general is weird. When I had to teach Victorian poetry to seniors, I broke them up into groups and had them do a project on different poets instead.

Too many to list.
Same!
Danielle Steele and Nora Roberts
Stephanie Meyers
Dan brown
I second Dan brown.
Danielle Steele and Alice Hoffman. I have tried. SO HARD. Since Alice Hoffman is so popular, but no dice. I just can’t with her.
Oh… You should try Hoffman again… she’s so great ! I’d start with ” The Rules Of Magic” & “Skylight Confessions”
@Deeni I audiobooked Practical Magic and I don’t know why I didn’t like it. It may have been the narrator ? I’ll try some of her other stuff
@Dana The Rules of Magic is a prequel to Practical Magic … I’ve read about 1/2 of her published works & can’t wait to get my hands on the other half.
Jodi Picoult
Charles Dickens. Thus far I have read only A Christmas Carol. Any attempt to read anything longer has kind of sputtered out. I lost count how many times I began A Tale of Two Cities and put it aside. But I will conquer this literary mountain someday.
Omg..did u read my comment..haha..me too!! And I love A Christmas Carol..read it too!! But the others..ugh!!

Paulo Coelhoe – only read one and found it so slow
I’ve tried so hard to like William Faulkner. I love southern fiction but he bores me to death

Nora Roberts. Her books look really good on paper but I just can’t.
Sarah J Maas I just don’t get the hype.
Jasper Fforde
Leigh Barduqo
Alex Marwood
Morgan Rhodes! And the lady who wrote the selection series!
Jodi picoult. Nora Roberts. I liked her when i was young.

Stephen king
Stephen King

Ive tried over and over to read Nicholas Sparks… i love the movies based on his books, but feel nothing when reading his books.
John Grisham
I always find at least one thing from every author that I like.
Stephen King, so predictable *sigh*
Jodi Picolut. Just too depressing for me
William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Stephen King, many of the YA authors, like who ever wrote the Twilight, and the Hunger Games.
Robert Jordan. I’ve tried so many times to like him. I want to like him, I just can’t.
Me too. I’m a huge fan of Brandon Sanderson and I wanted to read the Wheel of Time just so I could get to the last few that Brandon wrote, but I read the first book in the series and was very underwhelmed and then I quit halfway through the second book.
King of Bloat.
@Christian, exactly. I’ve tried reading WoT before because it’s a fantasy icon, but just couldn’t get into it. Then, when I heard Sanderson finished the series, I tried again. @Marissa, I’ve been told that it gets better, but it feels like homework when I read it. ?
I went all the way to the Bloat…I mean Blight with him (& Bland…I mean Rand) and it never even had the chance to fizzle out – it wouldn’t spark to begin with!
Sorry….

Charles Dickens, I always felt his books were not my cup of tea and were so slow.
Coelho
Gustav Flaubert.
Paolo Coelho
Stephen King
I realized I never answered my own questions. I cannot read King’s fiction but I love his essays. I have never been able to get into Tolkien, either.
