Is there a movie or show you have seen that made you not want to read the books?

Is there a movie or show you have seen that made you not want to read the books? For me it was Game of Thrones. I watched a couple seasons and by the end of the 4th I was done. Then recently I was given the books and started the first one this past week in vacation and found myself loving the book way more.

If I have seen the movie, I won’t read the book. If I have read the book, then I will see the movie. That’s just me.

I feel like this is backwards from what you’re saying but The Magicians. I love the show so much. Like its become an obsession but the books are so dull in comparison. None of the humor thats in the show is in the books. And I feel like the books don’t have the same range of characterization as the show.

I always use The Magicians as my example of movie/show that is better than the book.

@Angela I use the Magicians and The 100. In my opinion, the 100 is also better than the books.

Wow, I feel the opposite. I feel the books are better written than the show and that the show goes off book too much. And I feel like the books’ characters are much deeper- I especially dislike Quentin’s character in the show. He’s just so darn whiny and melodramatic. Don’t love Alice either.
I like Elliot in both and Margo in the show, but I think of them as separate from the book.

I was the other way … Obsessed with the show and tried the first book and just could not get into it. I think I left it too long ☹️

The books are so much richer than the show. So much more complex plot and characterization. Even though I know we’ll have to be satisfied with the subpar writing for the show in later seasons (and even if this spoils the books) I wish Martin would finish so we can find out what happened to characters who were cut from the series.

Lord of the Rings. They are my favorite movies and I’m worried that reading the books might ruin the movies. ?

If I see some movie I love, I always see if it is based on a book and then find the book!

Most recently I read Codename Villanelle since I loved the BBC series Killing Eve.

I didn’t know that was a book. I did like the series.

@Mary as always the book was a bit better. I’ve only read the first one but I really liked it.

I just reread that post and I thought it said a show that MADE you want to read the books not turn you off them.

I read Ready Player One in a day. I was excited & apprehensive to see the movie. I enjoyed the movie, but the book reigns supreme.

I watched the first two harry potter movies without having read the books and it made me lose interest completely. Fast forward 7 years, a friend has me start reading them and I devoured the entire series and now enjoy the movies because of having read them.

I think that the book is always absolutely definitely better than the adaptation

Books have so much more complexity. Done both and love both, although books are so much better if you have the time. GRRM is a whole other issue.
