I agree! I loved that version as well!

This is one of my favorites!

I forgot the one I didn’t like…that was Dracula with Winona Ryder. I couldn’t finish it out of boredom.

That’s my favorite one. With Keira.

I enjoyed the Princess Bride and most film adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays: Othello, Hamlet (Mel Gibson- he plays a good, raging brat), Romeo & Juliet (60’s version) & Taming of the Shrew. Worst adaptation: The Divinci Code. Ruined it for me.

Princess Bride is a favorite! I was blessed enough to see it on the big screen along with a symphony playing the music for the anniversary of it last year. I agree though that the DaVinci Code (despite how much I love Tom Hanks) was not as good as the book.

I like the BBC series of Pride and Prejudice, but not the movie. I do like Jane Austen’s other books adapted into film.

A classic in my.mind was Giant by Edna Ferber.
To me it was an excellent book.

The movie was a big hit and money maker that stared beautiful Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean.

A StreetCar Named Desire, the movie , play and book were equally excellent.

Gone With The Wind, both book and movie never have been my favorites.

A Raisin in.the Sun play and book were excellent. The movie wasn’t realistic and
I didn’t care for it.

I loved many Jane Austen adaptations as well and I thoroughtly enjoyed the 1945 version of The Picture of Dorian Gray. It was equally haunting and the lead actor Hurd Hatfield was so handsome it was hard to take my eyes off of him, lol.

The Orson Welles version of Jane Eyre was my favourite & the best T.V. adaptation of a classic novel I’d seen. The latest Oliver Twist was the worst.

I love the 1940 version of Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier. It stars Joan Fontain as Mrs De Winter and Laurence Olivier as her husband. It was directed by Alfred Hitchcock and it’s brilliant! The film I didn’t like was Tess of the D’Urbervilles starring Natasha Kinski. I thought she was miscast as an English country rose.

My favorites are 1) Rebecca with Sir Lawrence Olivier and 2) A Streetcar Named Desire with Marlon brando. And while I LOVE the book Love in the Time of Cholera, the movie with Javier Bardem was pretty terrible.

Ask for the best please ? I loved Maurice, Passage to India and Room with a view but couldn’t watch the adaptation of where Angels thread bc of the horribly sad themes. But that’s on Forster!

An American Tragedy :

Book was excellent and better than the movie, which stared a young Liz Taylor, M. Cliff.and
Shelly Winters all playing excellent roles.

Suddenly Last Summer:

This is a play by Tenn Williams that was later made into a movie staring Liz Taylor, Mont. Clift and Katherine Hepburn.

Again the movie was excellent but not as good as the play on Broadway or the book.

Not that it’s a “classic” but I adore Steven Kings early work Shining Firestarter And the films were so bad.. deviated so wildly from the books

I loved the Lord of the Rings movies. No, they were not absolutely faithful to the novels and, yes, there were a lot of things that were not included. But film and literature are two different forms of art, and their needs are not identical. A film that was completely faithful to even the best novel would be long and boring at best, and incomprehensible at worst. I loved the LOTR novels, and thought that the film adaptations were excellent, as well.

I disagree. I think that if films were truer to the books they would be better with a couple of exceptions but I also realise that although everyone reads the same words they imagine the scenes differently so would still see the characters & events differently to other people.
