I like it, it’s not a masterpiece, but it’s okay. I love it the most for the side-characters and side-romances, which is something that most YA authors forget about. It’s not ONLY about main couple. As an edit: I absolutely loathed main plot and couples in Infernal Devices, although I loved its secondary characters and plots.

OMG, I thought I was the only one who hated TID!!!

Ewa

Believe me, I thought the same! xD I absolutely hated Tessa and Will! Jem was okay, but he was collateral damage to those two, and the whole thing was nauseating.

0
Hannah

Tessa annoyed the hell outta me! Jem was just there to elongate the story! Will was the only one I didn’t absolutely hate, and he was pretty two dimensional.

I fell in the love with the series when I was in freshmen year of highschool. Don’t get discouraged by City of Bones because it’s really meh for a while. This is Clare’s first series and it definitely shows. The series was drawn out for 7 books when it should have ended at 3. But I think it’s decent, her other two are MUCH better but you can’t really read the most recent until you read Mortal Instruments. And the Dark Artifices is REALLY good. So I would read them.

Start with city of bones?

Yup

1
Brooklyn

@Ro yes! She has a 3 book series that intertwines with the main series. Cassandra herself has eve said to read it by the publication dates as well. It’ll make more sense. 🙂

You can read TID first! That’s what I did. TID, TMI, TFTSA, TDA.

I loved it! It took me a minute to get started but once I was in, I was in for the long haul

I would highly encourage the reading of this series. I wrote one MA term paper on The City of Bones and I ended up being able to present it at a conference. There is a lot more going on in Clare’s books than people think. She has a great plot, very interesting and in-depth characters, deals with some relevant social issues, and uses a lot of traditional fantasy motifs/narrative structure. ?

They are really good, u should read them.
I have a suggestion about the reading order, complete infernal devices trilogy and then read Mortal Instruments.

Jessaca

I think reading by publication date would be more wise so you don’t spoil anything

0
Jannat

@Jessaca I think it gets difficult coping up with two different story lines while in the same reading Universe and so to make it easier and NOT to spoil the story I suggested this reading order.

0
Jessaca

CoB would be the ideal start. It’s the introduction of the world Cassandra Clare built. Although it may be difficult to keep up, I do think it would be worth it to read in publication order. I read TMI, then TID and I was so confused and got spoiled. I know people who did it the other way around and regretted it. But, I guess it all depends on the reader.

0
Jannat

@Jessaca publication order is good for people like us who have read the both the series, I mean it is good for re-read.
That I think is because it really does get difficult to read two different series of the same universe at the same time, it gets complicated.
I know people who have read TMI and then TID and regretted(partly because of brother Zachariah), so I always recommend TID then TMI. This order I feel is better.
Also, when u read TID then TMI, u are in right timeline (of characters i.e. will herondale then Jace herondale etc.)
Though u are right, it depends upon the readers.

0
Hannah

I read it TID, then TMI. I think this is best as well, as TID is a prequel series so set before the events of TMI.

It’s a great series if you like YA fantasy! There are 6 books with 3 prequels so that’s good too if you like a long series too. I really enjoy the books.

Ro Jacques The first two series you need to read are The Mortal Instruments (TMI) and The Infernal Devices (TID). The fandom disagrees on how exactly to do that. Some people think it’s important to read the first 3 books of Mortal Instruments, then Infernal Devices, then the last 3 Mortal Instruments. That’s the ‘official’ recommendation, but I think it’s unnecessary and annoying. I personally hate jumping between storylines like that, and the ‘Infernal Devices spoilers’ that people like to mention in the last Mortal Instruments book, which that reading order is trying to avoid, don’t seem to me like they spoil anything at all. You can do that, though, or read all the way through Mortal Instruments first, or start with Infernal Devices like I did. Basically, you can read TMI and TID in whatever configuration you like, as long as you finish all 9 of those books before moving on in the universe. Together they lay the foundations for everything that follows.
After finishing TMI/TID, many people read Bane Chronicles next. That isn’t strictly necessary; you need the background from the first two series to understand it, but it doesn’t have indispensable plot info that we know of (for now- this may change with next year’s releases. More about them later.) So you can read it at any point after completing TMI/TID. I don’t recommend skipping it entirely, it’s fairly hilarious and fills in depth and background for some of the plot lines. What’s crucial is that, after TMI/TID, the next thing you read (except, of course, Bane Chronicles) is Tales of Shadowhunter Academy. It has information you’ll need for the next series, The Dark Artifices (TDA). There are two of that trilogy currently out: Lady Midnight, and Lord of Shadows. The third, Queen of Air and Darkness, will be out December 4th. The most recent releases are the first 5 stories in the Ghosts of the Shadow Market collection. Those will continue to come out, 1 per month, ebook only for the moment, through November. The print edition, with two extra stories that can’t come out this year because they have Queen spoilers, is scheduled for 2020 publication. (It’ll take so long because there was a hasty scheduling shuffle this past January, and next year was already packed with releases.) I suggest you don’t read the Ghosts stories until after Lord of Shadows- they follow up on a TDA plot thread, so reading them earlier might be confusing, and they have spoilers for previous books. You should definitely read them eventually, though, because we know that the Ghosts stories are setting up plot for at least 2 of the final 3 series planned: The Eldest Curses, The Last Hours and The Wicked Powers. (Potentially setting up for all 3, but since we don’t know anything yet about Wicked Powers, there’s no way to know.) None of that is out yet. Most of it is too far away for any kind of firm release time, although Eldest Curses #1: The Red Scrolls of Magic is set for April 2nd, and Last Hours #1 is expected late next year.

The first few are good it was originally intended to be a trilogy if I remember correctly and it could have easily finished there. After that I felt like it was just drawn out unnecessarily because of the popularity and the fact she could keep earning money on them. I ended up not finishing the rest of the series cause I felt they went downhill plot wise haven’t bothered with any of her other series either they all sound basically the same.

I’ve read all six books and it was my favourite growing up but I think you should probably look into the author’s history of plagiarism… I think you should decide for yourself if you still want to support Cassandra Clare after a little research..

I read the first book of TID first before anything and tbh really liked it, I then watched the tv show of Shadowhunters and loved it, I then tried to read the mortal instruments and I didn’t really like it. Also I read the Bane Chronicles after starting the tv show and before reading the book and kinda liked the downworlders more than I liked the shadowhunters
