I don’t like them. They are crude and I think inaproppriate. I mean teenagers read these and i don’t think they should be subject to such crude and inappropriate material. I mean the girl is practically a sex object to the man. I think it’s horrible.

How can the content of a book for adults be inappropriate? Not liking the content is one thing, but there’s no such thing as inappropriate. People have the right to choose what content they want to read. (I strongly dislike the books myself but would never seek to say it’s inappropriate for people to read them).

Quite literally the worst books I have ever read. I kept reading thinking I would come across something that showed me what the fuss was about. I didn’t. Just awful.

because it was poorly written , bad story or bad content?

0
Rebecca

@Jessalyn badly written, if she bit her lip one more time honestly! But also they were just Mills & Boon, not edgy or anything very different. It’s all about great marketing. I’m impressed with how it took off but disappointed I fell for it.

3
Jessalyn

i didn’t like the content. inappropriate and too much

2
Susan

@Rebecca I wonder if anyone ever counted the number of times she bit that lip.

1
Carmel

I liked the story as a whole, the relationship changes through the 3 books. Is it a Literary masterpiece ? Probably not… but it has sold a lot. I’ve heard the argument it’s not how the bdsm community is… I personally wouldn’t know/ care… it’s a story. I enjoyed it..

3
Chrystal

I loved these books. I’ve read all 3 Fifty Shades and both Grey and Darker as well. I was in a reading slump and had been taking things too seriously. It helped me laugh and still there is a deeper story about abuse, love, understanding, and even growth within oneself as well as a couple. I enjoyed them and I’m back to reading regularly again. Just finished Mrs. Peregrines peculiar children series. Waiting for October for the 4th one to come out. You should definitely read all 3 Fifty Shades.

1
Carmel

Chrystal Price I think I was in a similar spot… I thought they were an easy read… and I liked the story… I read them because a friend told me they had made her husband very happy!!

1
Daytona

I think they are an unrealistic portrayal of the bdsm community. It does not show a healthy bdsm relationships at all.

Disgusting to think today’s woman would even encourage this kind of behavior by buying this book. I only borrowed the 1st one just to see what so many women seemed so excited about! Refuse to read any more or watch the movie. Oh I realize some are into this type of thing, I’m not that naive. To each his own I guess.

0

Jennifer

I think that all books have their readers – everyone has a different opinion and they’re all valid. This series just didn’t work for me -I couldn’t get through the first book. But don’t let me stop you. The only books I’ll say “Never Buy!” are those by Faleena Hopkins, who has trademarked a commonly used word and is siccing her lawyers on other authors.

2
Reply
Carmel

Can you trademark a word???

1
Vonetta

Is that possible?

0
Jennifer

unfortunately, yes. But usually it has to do with a company (think Apple) – not romance books. To add insult to injury, she’s sueing a rights lawyer who was trying to have the trademakr annulled.

2
Jennifer

Her claim is that romance readers are not sophisticated enough to tell covers apart, so she needs a certain word to distinguish her covers from all the rest. In other words, she thinks her readers are idiots.

1
Carmel

@Jennifer I had to google her- she looks like a charmer!!!

2
Jennifer

@Carmel she’s actually very pretty – but what she’s doing to the romance book business is awful. Because of her, authors have had their books removed by Amazon, and reviews have dissapeared. Not nice.

0
Rebecca

I completely agree @Jennifer. I started to worry that I this thread was being a bit judgemental, and don’t get me wrong, I hated these books. But each to their own. Much like other books I’ve read and hated unlike many others but other books I’ve read and loved, unlike others. We all have a taste and thank goodness there are so many authors. If a book like 50 gets someone reading that can only be a good thing.

3
Carmel

@Rebecca as soon as you see 50 Shades in a post… expect an onslaught…

2
Jennifer

I’m a writer and get some terrible reviews, but I just think that everyone has different tastes in books – nothing to get upset about. I hated Fifty Shades too, but my BF loved it, lol. I was nice enough to go with her to the movie (terrible too, lol – but popcorn, right?)

2
Rebecca

@Jennifer LOL, I just haven’t been able to watch the films, the thought makes me cringe. ???

2
SusanQuestion author

They definitely aren’t the best books but readable – would prefer a Jackie Collins or Jilly Cooper though

3
Jennifer

@Susan I love both those authors!

1
Danniell

Yes! No on Faleena!

1
SusanQuestion author

I have read most of Jilly Coopers and quite a few Jackie Collins – the sexual content is so much better

2
Carmel

Jennifer Macaire I went to see the 1st film at a mums and bubs screening with a girlfriend who took me for my birthday…

Picture this- lots of mums with newborns to small bubbas … breastfeeding through the movie.., now that made me cringe!!! Ha ha… ???

5
Carmel

@Susan not read any… I always rolled my eyes as I thought they were ‘mills & boons’ ish…. but I’ve read a few M&B as I got older st my mums… you can read anything if you feel like it!!

1

I was reading them for what they were and not expecting more. I enjoyed them. I read the entire Crossfire series this month. If you enjoy Twlight/50 Shades then you might enjoy Crossfire books. They were better storylines IMP but you know still smutty 🙂

2

Crossfire: I read all 5 books in like 10 days and was sad when they were over.

I read mostly non-fiction so I like my fiction to be classic books or easy fun reads.

It is badly written and I never understood the hype. It is of course due to the sex, but it is not really scandalous or anything. I don’t like it is the man Christian that is doing the MAN role rich fantastic looking, she omg so beautiful etc etc. it is as old as time rich prince rescue the little poor but very beautiful girl. I only read it due to my daughter read it and told me too. So i did. It was a chore

When Fifty Shades of Gray came out, I watched it on television, and like others couldn’t quite grasp what all the hype was about. I’ve seen worse in movies, and the story line when you get to the nitty gritty of it, is a domineering guy, and a needy girl. I don’t think I will delve into any of the books.

This is not my genre, but I attempted to read because ALL my clients were going on about this “must read”.
As an avid reader, I found it so hard to read… bad grammar, repetitive rubbish (a million tiny pieces, my inner goddess, etc ??) . I have to develop an interest and a care for the characters and honestly found the “heroine” seriously irritating and found I didn’t actually care what happened to anyone in it. I finished one book, simply because I can’t not finish a book when I start one, and ended the book with a sense of relief that it was over! To. E honest, I was bored by the sex stuff. Repetitive and unrealistic …. no bdsm arrangement is anything like the stuff in this book. So… in a nutshell…
For me, a poorly written boring waste of time. But it had lots of usual non readers reading and some folk seem to have found it good/enlightening/titilating so all is good hey ?
